The sheer number of people who voted Yes in the 2014 independence referendum was a verdict on neoliberal Britain. The 307-years-old British state came within 200,000 votes of its dissolution. With a more radical vision of independence, we may well have won.

But we didn’t. And, as we mark the 10th anniversary of the vote, the break-up of Britain no longer feels within reach. The SNP has crashed amid financial scandals. Its membership has halved and the 2024 general election saw it lose over half a million votes.

At the same time, the thirst for change that drove people to back independence has only intensified.

How did we get here? Why have we not broken up the British state yet? Did we miss the opportunity? And what went wrong?

This Socialist Worker meeting discusses these issues and launches a new pamphlet that aims to answer these questions and more...

‘Shame on Starmer’—pensioner speaks out as MPs back winter fuel allowance cut Socialist Worker spoke to a pensioner facing the harsh realities of Starmer's cut to the winter fuel allowance following the vote to cut it.

The counter-protest had gained widespread support. It was backed by the Scottish TUC (STUC) union federation, nine trade unions, community, faith and refugee rights organisations, artists, comedians and musicians. Alan Crosby, EIS union president, said, “We, as proud affiliates of Stand Up To Racism, are here with you, to tell the fascists that they are not welcome and should go home.”
There were around 120 trade union banners on the SUTR counter-protest. Trade unions “mobilised seriously for the counter-protest with meetings and emails to members”.
