15 years… still much to do

Hope and Solidarity: 15 years On - Learning Disability England 15 years on from the BBC Panorama investigation that exposed abuse at Winterbourne View, too many people with learning disabilities and autistic people are still being failed by systems that should support them to live safe, good lives in their communities.  While there has been some progress ...

Over recent months, a series of ‘Beyond Boundaries’ events have brought together partners and community members across social care to help shape the future of how we work together with communities.

The survey should take around 5 minutes and your feedback will help inform future conversations, development, and partnership working to ensure the programme continues to have the greatest possible impact.

💬 “One of the best days of training I have been to in 17 years of being a social worker.”

💬 “Having people with lived experience makes a difference, you can see it from their perspective.”

💬 “It made me completely rethink my understanding.”

We’ve been overwhelmed by the feedback from our recent Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training sessions 💜

Again and again, people told us the same thing:
👉 Hearing directly from people with lived experience made the learning real, powerful and unforgettable.

From autism and learning disability awareness, to reasonable adjustments, communication and person-centred care, these sessions created open conversations, challenged assumptions and helped people reflect on how we can improve support for others every day.

What attendees valued most:
✔ Experts by Experience sharing personal stories
✔ Interactive and engaging delivery
✔ Practical examples and videos
✔ Safe spaces for discussion and reflection
✔ Real insight into everyday barriers and challenges

A huge thank you to all of our trainers, co-trainers and Experts by Experience who continue to make these sessions so impactful.

Sometimes the hardest thing isn’t what people see, it’s what’s going on underneath.

This video shares real experiences of feeling different, trying to “fit in”, and the toll that can take on mental health. It also shows something just as important, what can change when people feel able to be themselves and ask for support.

No one should feel like they have to act “normal” just to belong.

If you’re struggling, talking to someone can make all the difference. And if you’re supporting others, listening without judgement matters more than you think.

At the Regional Forum Conference in Blackpool, we worked alongside self advocates to explore what compassion really means in our communities. 💜

The result was this powerful message, created through shared experiences, lived expertise, and honest conversations about the small things that can make a big difference to people’s lives.

From being a good neighbour, to truly listening and celebrating our differences, compassion is more than a feeling. It’s action, connection, and making sure nobody feels alone.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed their voices, ideas, and experiences on the day. Together, we continue building stronger, kinder, and more inclusive communities. 💬✨

Building on the work at NWRF 25! 🌟

We’ve had a busy couple of days delivering provider engagement sessions in Wigan , looking at My Day My Way, planning for day and community-based support.

A huge thank you to the self-advocates from Bury People First and ACT for sharing their powerful stories of support. It was incredible to have people there telling their own stories, ensuring our planning is truly co-produced.

What our partners had to say:

"Great networking. It showed that there is some great passion and offers already happening in Wigan."

"Liasing with other provisions was really helpful."

"Support is needed for everyone in many different ways, not always in the way you think."

Together, we are working to strengthen relationships with the council and other providers to make sure we are more open to individual needs and interests.
