Dazzling Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky from our perspective, is now starting to make an appearance late at night. Find it by following the line of Orion's belt stars down and left.
It was well up in the south last night around 1.30am when I headed outside for a quick look up.
Sirius means 'scorching'. The Greeks called it a second Sun and it was the most important star for the ancient Egyptians. It's first appearance in dawn summer skies would mark the imminent flooding of the Nile River delta.
