24TH GURKHA CUP – QUEENS PARADE – SUNDAY 24 MAY 26

It was a genuine pleasure to attend the 24th Gurkha Cup and to meet the dedicated organisers, particularly the event director, Mr Jumkagi Gurung, and his hardworking team. Their commitment and passion have been instrumental in the tournament’s enduring success.

I thoroughly enjoyed the football matches, which showcased excellent skill and sportsmanship. It was also a privilege to engage with our local dignitaries, whose presence highlighted the strong community support for this event.

The organisation of the tournament, which attracted a crowd of around 15,000 attendees, was exemplary. The seamless coordination ensured a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Additionally, the variety and quality of the food on offer were truly delightful, adding to the festive atmosphere.

A particularly moving moment was the tribute paid to the late Major L B Gurung, past president of the Gurkha Cup, whose legacy continues to inspire all involved.

I was honoured to be introduced to Mr Bipin Duwaldi, Chargé d’Affaires from the Embassy of Nepal, whose attendance reinforced the deep cultural ties celebrated by the Gurkha Cup. I am especially grateful to Captain Dipak Ghale for the kind invitation to attend this wonderful event.

The Gurkha Cup remains a highlight in Aldershot’s calendar, fostering community spirit, camaraderie, and sporting excellence. I look forward to supporting this remarkable event in the years ahead.

As the official charity partner, SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity will play a central role, raising awareness of the practical, emotional, and financial assistance it provides to members of the Armed Forces family. Visitors to the National Armed Forces Day Event on 27 and 28 June will have the opportunity to meet SSAFA representatives, learn more about the charity’s work, and support its mission.

We join the Ministry of Defence and British Army in remembering Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan with great sadness and send our deepest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.

During our recent visit to the Aldershot Garrison Military Cemetery yesterday, 14 May, we noticed that visitors had laid beautiful red roses on some of the memorial stones in the Garden of Remembrance.

Such a thoughtful gesture and a truly lovely touch, showing that those remembered there are still very much in people’s hearts. 🌹
