18/12/2024
Weekly Precipitation Update, for DE55, DE4, DE56.
7/12/24 - 14/12/24 = 16 mm rain.
More wet and darkness.
I thought this picture was interesting. I had to dig a hole near to a lawn that I mow.
The lawn is always wet, and I struggle at the start and end of the season to get onto it for mowing. I dug this hole and this picture is 600mm down and the soil looks quite dry, for saying that the lawn next to it has standing water.
It seems to show that it's not so much of a flooding issue put more of a lack of infiltration, unfortunately this customer doesn’t have lawn treatments but I do look after a neighbour’s lawn.
So I will use this information to deal with similar issues on there’s, by carrying out Slitter Aeration and applications of Liquid Gypsum to help bind together the clay particles and improve infiltration for water and air.
12/12/2024
Weekly Precipitation Update, for DE55, DE4, DE56.
30/11/24 - 7/12/24 = 36 mm rain.
Another wet and dark week. The days seem really short now, especially when the sun doesn’t seem to come up. Never mind shortest day not far away.
At least the temperatures are a bit higher, no frosts at the minute and no sign of more snow!!
04/12/2024
Weekly Precipitation Update, for DE55, DE4, DE56.
23/11/24 - 30/11/24 = 25 mm rain.
Another wet week, think the ground has absorbed as much as it can now, the lakes are starting to appear.
The grass has still been growing with slightly warmer temps after the snow, I've had to call and make additional "last cuts" on a couple of lawns this week.
If it is fit then it is ok to give it a trim, just not too short, just take the top off, this will also help remove leaves that are on the lawn.
28/11/2024
Weekly Precipitation Update, for DE55, DE4, DE56.
16/11/24 - 23/11/24 = 34 mm rain + 140mm snow!
Well, that was an exciting week, plenty of wet stuff in various forms.
Not sure it's worth worrying too much about your garden, this coming week is looking a lot better but very cold, stay warm and enjoy the brighter days.
Hopefully, this is where the work you carried out in your garden, throughout the year, of getting the underground workforce of microbes, bacteria and fungi working hard for you with this helping to absorb more moisture, so reducing runoff. The more the soil acts like a sponge the more resilient your lawn and garden with be, as it will hold onto moisture and nutrients much better allowing the life and plants to recover and cope with the more extremes weather we seem to be having.
20/11/2024
Weekly Precipitation Update, for DE55, DE4, DE56.
9/11/24 - 16/11/24 = 1 mm
Another dry week, and some bright days, and getting some dramatic skies on the dog walks.
Mow if you can when it's fit.
Although as I write this we have had a good covering of snow!!
13/11/2024
Weekly Precipitation Update, for DE55, DE4, DE56.
2/11/24 - 9/11/24 = 1 mm
Another dry week, if, unfortunately misty and grey, so hardly seemed to get light some days, winters coming.
The grass is still growing, so might have to make return visits.
The forecast is looking brighter if maybe a bit cooler.
04/11/2024
Weekly Precipitation Update, for DE55, DE4, DE56.
26/10/24 - 2/11/24 = 3 mm
Again, another relatively dry week, lots of Fungal issues in lawns with the mild temps and high humidity.
I never see this as a problem, it can look unsightly but is really a sign of lots of fungal activity below the surface, the mushrooms you see are just the reproductive parts, making the most of the warm and damp weather, as soon as the temperatures drop further they will disappear.
I carry out a soil test for Fungal/Bacteria ratio, the ideal for lawns is 1/1, so a lot of mushrooms show a good underground network of life doing its best to maintain fertility and create top soil.
29/10/2024
Weekly Precipitation Update, for DE55, DE4, DE56.
19/10/24 - 26/10/24 = 7 mm
Much reduced rainfall, which is great for getting in the garden. The ground is still wet obviously with the short days but at least it's not a swamp.
Autumn is definitely here, lots of Fungi about as in the pictures. Fungi is also appearing in lots of lawns, I never see this as a problem, it can look unsightly but is really a sign of lots of fungal activity below the surface, the mushrooms you see are just the reproductive parts, making the most of the warm and damp weather, as soon as the temperatures drop further they will disappear.
21/10/2024
Weekly Precipitation Update, for DE55, DE4, DE56.
12/10/24 - 19/10/24 = 20.25 mm
Well that was a bit better, still a good amount but spread out over the week so the ground at least has a bit of time to soak it up, the more water soaked up into the soil means less runoff, reduces flooding and overwhelmingly of drainage systems.
The more we can improve the soil in our gardens the more it helps with the resilience of our area, and helps hold back the water, we can all do our bit.
12/10/2024
Weekly Precipitation Update, for DE55, DE4, DE56.
5/10/24 - 12/10/24 = 30 mm
Another wet week. Lower light levels and less sun is making it increasingly difficult to work and be dry, the ground is constantly wet. I managed to get a couple of aerations done Friday and applied some liquid Gypsum to help alleviate the water logging issues. I'll get back to you with results.
Mowing - keep cutting when conditions allow, raise the cut to give a slightly longer leaf to help with photosynthesis.
05/10/2024
Weekly Precipitation Update, for DE55, DE4, DE56.
28/9/24 - 5/10/24 = 52 mm
Another solid wet week. The roads around here were back to being flooded, as you can see form the fields it's been a high tide again. Hoping that it stays a bit drier as I have some renovations to still complete and could do with them not turning into a wet ploughed field.
29/09/2024
Weekly Precipitation Update, for DE55, DE4, DE56.
21/9/24 - 28/9/24 = 75 mm
That was a bit of a wet week. Mainly falling on the 21st & 22nd, the ground seems to have coped well with it, that dry spell really dried out the ground so giving the moisture somewhere to go.
Looks as though there might be a wet start to the week but then mainly dry.
