A year ago today on Saturday 29th March 2025, on the 60th anniversary of the railway line closure, the first completed stretch of the Borderline Greenway was officially opened by the High Sheriff of Northumberland and the Mayor of Alnwick.
This was a culmination of a lot of hard work, skill and effort from volunteers, councillors and the local community.
The directors of the Borderline Greenway continue to develop plans to build on this success and open up more of the disused line as an active travel route through the beauty of the North Northumbrian countryside.

A big thank you to Cheviot Countryside Contracting who donated a gate to replace the one that was vandalised over the winter.
These gates are there to prevent animal incursion on to the path and the surrounding areas.
All the directors at the Borderline Greenway are grateful for this excellent bit of community work.

Unfortunately, one of the gates on the Greenway has been broken beyond repair.
This looks like a deliberate act and impacts not only the volunteers of the Borderline Greenway but also the people who use this community asset to access nature and green spaces. With limited funds, situations like these hinder future progress and development.
If you see any damage or anything that you think is a hazard, please contact us.

More great progress along the Aln Valley Railway
Exciting Progress for Aln Valley Railway! 🚂
We’re delighted to share that Northumberland County Council has agreed to part-fund essential repairs to the historic Eden Hill Bridge in Alnwick - a vital step forward in our mission to reconnect Alnwick and Alnmouth by rail.
The bridge will benefit from a £255,000 investment, with £125,000 from Northumberland County Council and £130,000 from Historic Railways, allowing vital waterproofing and structural repairs to be carried out later this year.
Earlier in 2025, the Council formally adopted the bridge from Historic Railways and is now taking the lead on the repair work. Once complete, this will allow Aln Valley Railway to extend our track and greenway beneath the bridge, continuing our line towards Alnmouth.
This marks a major milestone in the Aln Valley Railway Trust’s long-term goal of restoring the full line between Alnwick and Alnmouth - enhancing the area’s heritage appeal, supporting local tourism, and safeguarding Northumberland’s engineering legacy for future generations.
🔧 The works are expected to begin later this year, lasting approximately 12 weeks.
💛 If you’d like to be part of this exciting journey and help make history, we’re always looking for new volunteers to join our friendly team.

A beautiful morning on the Borderline Greenway followed by apple pressing at The Bullfield Community Orchard which is just five minutes from the start of the trail.
It shows what can be achieved by community groups in and around Alnwick.
