A huge thank you to Reddingshonden Special Search Dog Team for inviting Specialist Dogs – Training Centre over and making us feel so welcome!

We had the pleasure of spending three days with a fantastic group of people and their dogs.

The team had put a lot of effort into organising the weekend, giving us the opportunity to work in some really interesting locations, including woodland, a landfill site, shorelines and open ground. Plenty of different challenges for both dogs and handlers!

It was great to see so many enthusiastic handlers, some lovely dogs doing excellent work, and most importantly, people who are genuinely interested in learning, sharing experiences and improving together.

We had some really good discussions throughout the weekend, exchanged plenty of ideas, and hopefully gave everyone a few new things to think about and take back into their training.

A special thank you to everyone who helped organise the weekend and supported the training. We know how much work goes on behind the scenes to make events like this happen, and we really appreciate it.

We came home with some great memories, new friendships and a lot of respect for the work this team is doing.

Thank you again for having us! We hope it won't be too long before we meet again, perhaps next time in Scotland!

The importance of gut health in search and rescue dogs 🩺🐕

A healthy gut is vital for a dog's overall well-being, resilience, and ability to recover. This is particularly evident in search and rescue dogs, which regularly face physical and mental challenges during training and deployment. Staying healthy from the inside out helps them to stay focused, resilient and ready for every mission.

Disrupting the balance of the gut microbiome can affect far more than just digestion. This is why maintaining good gut health is an important part of supporting a dog's long-term health and wellbeing. 💙

Search Planning Matters

Finding odour is only part of the challenge.

Before every search, handlers must assess the environment, understand potential hazards, identify likely areas of interest, and develop a plan for effective coverage.

The best search dogs in the world still need good search planning.

At Specialist Dogs – Training Centre, we teach handlers not only how to work their dogs, but also how to think, analyse, and make decisions in real operational environments.

A successful search team is built from both ends of the lead.

Hot Weather – Your Dog Comes First

Warm weather can significantly increase the physical demands placed on working dogs. Training should always be adapted to the conditions, with shorter sessions, frequent breaks, access to fresh water, and plenty of opportunities to cool down.

Remember, there is no benefit in pushing a dog beyond its limits. Good training is about consistency, not intensity.

The best handlers know when to train—and when to stop.

Take care of your dog, and they will take care of you.

From Student to Operational Team

Every operational HRDD team starts with a first training day.

Through structured learning, practical experience, and exposure to a wide range of search environments, handlers and dogs develop the skills needed to work confidently and effectively.

At Specialist Dogs – Training Centre, our goal is not simply to train dogs. We develop complete teams capable of operating on land, around water, and within built environments.

The journey is demanding, but the results are worth it.

What Makes a Good Search Area?

Before a dog starts searching, the handler should already be assessing the environment.

Wind, terrain, vegetation, water, natural barriers, and the overall complexity of an area can all influence how odour moves and where it may collect.

Understanding the search area helps the dog work more effectively and supports better operational decisions.

A successful search starts long before the dog is deployed.

Workshop and certification event in Germany.

The training provided an excellent opportunity for our handlers and dogs to work in challenging environments, gain valuable experience, and continue developing operational skills alongside international teams.

We appreciate the professionalism, hospitality, and effort that went into delivering the event, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be part of it.

Thank you once again to everyone involved, and we look forward to future cooperation and training together.
