We want our page to be a place where people can share how they feel about Waddesdon and talk about their experiences in a fun environment. We welcome feedback – both positive and negative. It helps us to learn and grow. These house rules aim to ensure everyone can enjoy themselves while they’re here. We ask you to be nice and polite to one another - and respect each other’s views and comments. We ask all users to ensure your contributions are civil, polite, tasteful and suitable for all ages. We won’t tolerate disruptive, offensive or abusive behaviour, unlawful or objectionable content. In general, we don’t moderate posts – except on the rare occasion that someone has used offensive language or made libellous allegations about named or identifiable individuals on our page. We have a duty to protect our staff and volunteers, so while hiding or deleting comments is totally out of character for us, our legal position is that any post containing a libellous accusation, should be removed. If an individual continues to post offensive, threatening or libellous content then we’ll be forced to block that person from the page. We won’t tolerate postings, content, or links that are racist, sexist or homophobic. We also don’t permit linking to or posting any content which endorses illegal activity, or any activities against the values of Waddesdon or the National Trust. Today, we opened 1939–1945: A House Interrupted, an immersive journey into the extraordinary story of Waddesdon Manor during the Second World War.

In 1939, the House became home to 100 evacuee children from Croydon. Discover how wartime life transformed the Manor, with rooms evoking the children’s experiences and Dorothy de Rothschild’s first-hand account bringing this remarkable chapter to life.

From the final preparations to welcoming our first visitors, here’s a first glimpse behind the scenes as we bring this story to life.

This Wednesday (21 October), Standing with Giants returns to Waddesdon Manor with D-Day 1476 – For Your Tomorrow, a powerful installation commemorating the 1,476 lives lost under British command on D-Day. Set within the beautiful grounds, the life-sized silhouettes offer a moving opportunity to pause, reflect and remember.

If you'd like to stay for longer, enjoy our 1940s-inspired Afternoon Tea, served in the historic Manor Restaurant. Savour traditional sweet treats, freshly baked scones and savoury favourites in a setting steeped in history.

What’s your favourite detail in this painting?

Everyday objects in 17th-century Dutch genre painting carry hidden symbolism. In ‘A Girl with a Basket of Fruit at a Window’ (1657) by Gerrit Dou, a finely rendered tapestry curtain is pulled aside to reveal the wealth of the couple behind. The gentleman playing the violin, a sign of romantic love. Grapes held within the basket, a symbol of the debaucherous Roman god Bacchus. An empty bird perch evoking a loss of innocence, and the dead chicken reflecting the swift passage of time. Does the seeding flower represent the promise of new life or the loss of youth and beauty?

2027 sees 150 years since Waddesdon Manor’s foundation stone was laid, and 70 years since the house was given to the National Trust.

In honour of this milestone, we are inviting schools to take part in our very special art project, which will focus on the history of Waddesdon Manor and its collection and culminate in a parade, and display over the Easter holidays.

Participation is free for schools with the National Trust Education Group Access Pass, and you can involve as many children as you would like!

If you would like to get involved, please email [email protected] before Friday 23 October.

Waddesdon Manor is closed on Wednesday 14 October for location filming and will reopen on Thursday 15 October.

The South Front and Parterre remain closed until 21 October. Works are also ongoing to install ground source heat pumps and conserve the stone façade of the House. We are working hard to minimise disruption and all other areas will operate as normal.

Profits from filming help care for Waddesdon Manor, including conservation work and, through the Rothschild Foundation, funds work in the arts, local community and the environment.
