Rain rain rain. Either too much or too little, seldom just enough.

Anyway, macadamia trees love it. We wrote a blog about how it can take like 5 years before they give a good harvest. So why would a farming family in Malawi plant one?

The answer is in the bio dear reader, find out more!

Garlic bread, but make it even better 🧄

We took our Crunchy Macadamia Butter and turned it into a rich, nutty garlic butter, and we may never look at garlic bread the same way again.

It's exactly why we made our recipe eBook: to show that our Mac Butter can do way more than just spread on toast (although we know that's still the most popular choice)!

The recipe is in the free Nutcellars recipe eBook. Link in bio.

Go on, put your macs to work.

We made a recipe book. 🌰

Macadamias get treated as a snack, which is fair enough, they're very good at being a snack. But they're buttery and rich enough to do real work in a dish, and we don't say that nearly often enough.

So we spent a day with a long table, a lot of macadamias, and four people who hadn't eaten lunch. Hummus that turned silky. Pesto with the edge taken off. Garlic bread gone golden and nutty. A tarte tatin that came out of the oven upside down and tasted brilliant anyway XD

All of it's in the book, and the book is free.

Link in bio. Go and put some macadamias in something.

How does macadamia fit into the world of Fairtrade? Time for some .

Back in 2004, Andrew (our dad and MD) began working with Ken Mkengala, now Manager of HIMACUL, on a Malawi Government / African Development Bank project introducing macadamia to smallholders in Malawi's Central and Northern Regions. The vision: a smallholder macadamia cooperative industry that could reach international markets, and customers like you.

That work contributed to macadamia being included in the original Fairtrade nut standards (this being 22 years ago!) For the cooperatives, Fairtrade means a minimum price that acts as a safety net when markets dip, plus a Premium paid on top that members decide together how to spend.

Trees had to be planted, co-ops formed and routes to market built. It's taken longer than we envisaged, but it's a relationship that has stood the test of time. Plant a tree for the next generation, and all that.

In many ways, the work has just started. With an established route to the UK market (thanks to you, dear follower), the seeds are planted for a more prosperous future for hundreds of farmers in the cooperatives our trade supports.

More Fairtrade Fortnight stories to come. Link in bio for our full Fairtrade journey.

A quick ditty with Ken Mkengala of HIMACUL (the highlands macadamia cooperative union ltd)

In order to effect change in the way want to, it starts with the seed (or in our case, nut). This is a quick look in to one of the tree nurseries that HIMACUL manages, supported by , which prepares young trees so they're available for smallholder cooperative farmers. Without nurseries like this, macadamia trees wouldn't be accessible to the of types farmers we work with.

By buying Nutcellars Malawi Macadamias - you're not putting trees in the ground - but you're buying into the system and the collective work that makes this kind of activity possible, and we thank you for it!

Anyway, this was just a quick edit, but hope you liked it. Big thanks as always to Ken for showing us around!
