We’ve been out and about, attending a number of careers fairs recently.

Last week we attended Queen's University Belfast's Actuarial and Finance Careers Fair and this week, our team were at the Tech, Science and Engineering Fair.

It’s been great chatting to students about our graduate and placement opportunities and helping them learn more about a career in economic regulation.

We hosted our 10th annual Winter Preparedness Forum event today.

The event brought together industry leaders across gas, electricity and water to discuss the challenges facing Northern Ireland’s utilities sector during the winter period. New for this year, was a focus on cybersecurity and how associated risks are being managed, within the context of wider network resilience.

A huge thank you to our expert speakers, for delivering such valuable insights. We are committed to fostering industry collaboration to ensure the best outcomes for Northern Ireland consumers, and are grateful to everyone involved for contributing to an interesting and insightful day.

Supporting mental health and wellbeing is always a priority at the Utility Regulator.

To recognise , we’ve reminder our staff about the importance of ‘taking a moment’. Take time to get outside, walk and clear the head. Take a moment to chat to a colleague or check in with our Mental Health First Aiders.

One of our Mental Health First Aiders, Conor McConnell (they/them), shares their thoughts on the important role they play helping colleagues across the organisation.

"I’m Conor McConnell (they/them), a Regulatory Analyst and Mental Health First Aider at the Utility Regulator. I first trained as a Mental Health First Aider almost four years ago, to support individuals in my personal and professional life to the best of my ability.

“Mental health doesn’t stop at the office door. Being a Mental Health First Aider within the Utility Regulator is one of my proudest accomplishments. Not only am I helping colleagues address any personal and professional concerns, I am also creating a space where it becomes okay to talk about it. As someone who has previously struggled with low mental health, I am very proud to be a safe space and sign-poster for individuals who are facing those struggles.”

We are proud of our team of Mental Health First Aiders who offer compassionate, confidential support to colleagues facing mental health challenges. They have each received training, through the Public Health Agency, that has been invaluable in ensuring they can support colleagues during times of difficulty.

Every day, we’ll continue to build a workplace where wellbeing is prioritised, voices are heard and help is always available.

Our colleagues, Karen Gault and Mary Farrelly recently attended Translink's Better on Board Charter update session at Belfast Grand Central Station.

As a signatory to the Better on Board Charter since 2024, the Utility Regulator was pleased to join organisations from across Northern Ireland to learn more about Translink's latest initiatives, discuss opportunities to promote sustainable travel among colleagues and network with Charter partners who share a common goal of encouraging public transport use and supporting greener workplaces.

Participation in the Charter aligns with our commitment to working collaboratively with others to help achieve the decarbonisation targets set out in the Northern Ireland Climate Change Act.

Last week, our colleague Paulino García attended the Citizens’ Energy Forum in Brussels, organised by the European Commission.

The event brought together cities, energy communities, non-governmental organisations, consumer associations, businesses and citizens to discuss how the ambitions of the Citizens Energy Package can be translated into practical initiatives that deliver real benefits for citizens, cities and communities.

The Forum featured contributions from Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, alongside Members of the European Parliament, Nicolás González Casares and Seán Kelly. Discussions focused on practical ways to make the energy transition work for citizens, covering affordability, consumer protection, renewable energy sharing and experiences from communities across Europe leading the transition to clean energy.

The topics discussed at the Citizens’ Energy Forum are at the heart of the Utility Regulator’s duties to protect the short and long-term interests of energy consumers, particularly in relation to price and quality of service. Our attendance at the Forum provided valuable insights into the challenges affecting consumers across Europe, including ideas and best practice from other EU regulators.
