SS Nomadic SS Nomadic carried first and second class passengers out to Titanic from the French Port of Cherbour
(613)

Exactly one quarter size of Titanic, Nomadic was built using the same steel, the same rivets by the same people in Harland and Wolff Belfast. Nomadic carried many famous people to Titanic, but also continued as a tender to many other great ocean going liners. She also saw service as a troop carrier in World War One, and a mine sweeper in World War Two, and her varied career prior to returning home included being a floating restaurant and nightclub in Paris

Did you know? 🚢

Back in May 1911 on the very day RMS Titanic was launched from Slipway No. 3, some other important vessels were setting sail.

RMS Olympic, SS Nomadic and SS Traffic all left Belfast for the first time, with Nomadic making her way to Cherbourg in France, where she would await the arrival of the great Olympic-class liners.

It was the first time Nomadic sailed out of Belfast and remarkably, she would make the journey back just once, 95 years later in 2006.

Today, she is the last remaining White Star Line vessel in the world and stands proudly back in Belfast, just a short distance from where she was built. ⚓

📅 in 1912

SS Nomadic earned her place in history, transporting 172 First and Second Class passengers to RMS Titanic at Cherbourg.

Passengers and luggage were onboard Nomadic by 5pm, though Titanic had yet to arrive. It was another hour before her funnels were sighted, with the liner reaching Cherbourg at around 6.35pm.

At 8.10pm, Titanic departed for Queenstown (now Cobh), as Nomadic’s crew called out their farewells: “Goodbye, see you in fifteen days!”

Did you know?

In March 1999, the SS Nomadic ended her time as a floating restaurant on the River Seine in Paris, opposite the Eiffel Tower, after safety regulations required an inspection of her ageing hull.

Built alongside the RMS Titanic, the SS Nomadic carried passengers to the famous liner and later served as a troop carrier in both World Wars. Today, she is the last remaining White Star Line ship in the world, now fully restored and back home in Belfast, welcoming visitors on board. 🚢

Admission is included with your Titanic Experience ticket. Book online and save👉 titanicbelfast.com/tickets
