After recent remedial works to repair a leak at Lagley Meadow left the area looking untidy, the Berkhamsted West Liberal Democrat team visited to see the situation for themselves.

We raised the issue with the relevant team at Dacorum Borough Council, who responded quickly to remove the fencing, clear the area and cut the grass back.

The affected area will again be reseeded in early autumn, when conditions give the new grass the best chance to establish successfully.

If you’ve spotted a local issue or need help with a problem in Tring or Berkhamsted, please do get in touch. We’re here to help and to make sure local voices are heard.

Despite the recent wet weather Rosemarie and Nick found some space between the showers this afternoon to go up to Hastoe (highest point in Hertfordshire!) and finish off delivery of the tabloid format leaflet.

They've also made a start on the current literature with deliveries in the centre of Tring.

Here's hoping the weather improves soon!

We’re supporting White Ribbon Day, an annual international campaign held on 25 November to raise awareness and take action to end violence against women and girls. It calls on men and boys to be allies in preventing gender-based violence by challenging harmful attitudes, systems and behaviours around masculinity.

Massive congratulations to Lib Dem Danny Chambers MP for bringing this legislation successfully through parliament, and to Dog Trust UK, RSPCA and other notably animal welfare groups championing this.

Although it was a problem well before COVID lockdowns, the number of people profiteering from animal cruelty and cynically exploiting our human emotions that makes (most) of us bond strongly with puppies, kittens and "cute" baby animals means we can sometimes be blinded to, or make excuses for, the journey that animal may have been on prior to us meeting them. High demand and high pet prices during COVID certainly made the problem, and the animal mistreatment, considerably worse - so it's great to see that the law now has a role in preventing this. Additionally, its a big leap forward in getting UK law to acknowledge family pets and more than just possessions ("chattel") and I hope will go towards much harsher punishments and investigation efforts to those who steal, harm (or worse) a family pet that the law currently demands.

So whilst I accept that this bill doesn't go as far as many of us would like, we need to be practical and acknowledge the political system and process for passing laws that we live in. Inaction is easily justified, so bringing about change - especially for a new opposition MP - is extremely difficult and loaded with obstacles. So it's a huge success that this bill has moved forward, and lets hope it leads to further animal protections and welfare promotion in future law.

Breaking: Today marks a huge milestone as the Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets Bill officially passes its final stage in UK Parliament👏

Not only will this help better protect the young puppies, kittens and ferrets who are illegally smuggled into the UK, but it will also help our investigations and prosecution cases by finally closing the import loophole on dogs with cropped ears and docked tails, and cats with declawed paws.

The legislation will also prevent the importation of vulnerable, pregnant cats and dogs, and tighten the rules on non-commercial pet travel, limiting the number of dogs and cats that may be brought in per vehicle.

After years of campaigning, this is a huge step forward, and the Bill will officially become law once it receives royal assent in due course!

A massive thank you to everyone who supported this important change in legislation - please share this news far and wide 🔁
