When walking your dogs off the lead it's important to always maintain a line of sight between you and your dog and the environment. Know your environment. It is vital to maintain a 360 degree observation for other dogs, people and distractions that may spook your dog.
Line of sight allows you to perform a recall and keep your dog under control at all times.
Giving your dog a degree of freedom to roam off the lead needs to be earned. This should only be done if you have complete control on your dogs obedience.
Practice and perfect your obedience drills at all times. A Kong toy is a great way to build those drills, obedience, confidence and a strong bond with a reward.
Watch how PD Indio reaches the brow of the hill and waits, he understands the drills and when recalled "close" he comes as instructed.
Do not even think about owning a Belgian Malinois or a Dutch Shepherd unless you are prepared to train and put the hours into your dogs obedience. Always buy your protection dogs from trusted sources.

Getting the best from your family protection dog is all about the bond we build and playtime.
When you take your K9 to the beach and playtime is off the lead please do so responsibly.
If other dogs are nearby running off their lead then clip your dogs up and be responsible. It's a great way for your dog to understand the switch from playtime to being on the lead and obedience.
Use a kong toy to reinforce the rewards for your K9 and good behaviour.
Whilst this maybe an entertaining film to watch and anything that promotes what an amazing breed the Belgian Malinois is - the reality is that it will also encourage some irresponsible people to go out and buy a fluffy Malinois thinking they can do tricks and all sorts with their new dog or make them look cool.
The reality .... your Malinois is a very capable machine that can be overwhelming to a
person who doesn't understand the breed and what they are capable of. Then when they get in too deep and realise they can't handle or control the breed it will end up in a rescue shelter. Taking on a Malinois is a big commitment and requires a lot of knowledge skill and patience.

Today we celebrate K9 Veterans Day which is dedicated to the service of all K-9 MWD's who have served since World War II. The incredible work of the K9 MWD has saved countless lives in war.
K9 veterans Day is a day that all dog owners around the world should unite and take a moment to honour and remember the service, selfless sacrifice that our K9 MWD's and particularly their handlers have given.
More so the work of the MWD K9 has been a critically important asset in the war on terror and high tempo special forces operations globally.
We honour and salute the K9 MWDs we have lost, those who serve today and most importantly the handlers who have a very special unique bond that cannot be explained.
We pay particular tribute to Mike Ritland and his Warrior Dog Foundation who do so much to rehabilitate our K9 MWDs and stop them from being euthanised. Mike we are all forever in your debt for the amazing work you do.

Building a bond with your is all part of the process and one which he/she will serve you and your family with complete devotion, loyalty, unconditional love and protection.
