Would you know what to do if your clothing caught fire?

STOP — don’t run if your clothes catch fire.

DROP — drop to the ground immediately.

ROLL — roll over and over, covering your face with your hands to smother the flames.

Practice this at home with children so they know what to do if clothes catch fire — it could save a life.

24 hours a day, 365 days a year, fire control teams coordinate resources, assess risk and support firefighters and incident commanders through everything from fires and flooding to wildfires and major incidents.

Their work may happen behind the scenes, but their contribution is vital.

Halloween is a time for fun, not for frightful accidents.

Before you head out trick-or-treating, remember these quick safety tips. Buy costumes from reputable retailers and make sure they have the CE, UKCA or UKNI (Northern Ireland) mark. Look for additional safety labelling from the British Retail Consortium that says ‘This garment has undergone additional safety testing for flammability’, these costumes will be available from many major high street retailers.

Use battery tea lights instead of candles to reduce the risk of fire.

Stick to well-lit pavements and paths. Make sure children are visible, wear bright or reflective clothing — glow sticks, wristbands, or torches help drivers see you.

Let’s keep children safe while they enjoy the magic of Halloween.

To mark International Control Room Week, Phil Garrigan, Chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council, has shared a message of thanks to Fire Control colleagues across the UK:
“The calm, professional voice that answers a 999 call can make an enormous difference.

“This year has been a powerful reminder of the extraordinary demands placed on Fire Control teams. During the unprecedented wildfire activity across parts of the UK, Control colleagues dealt with exceptionally high call volumes, supported stretched operational resources and helped coordinate complex, fast-moving incidents in incredibly challenging circumstances.

“Fire Control teams are at the heart of every emergency response. Their work may often take place behind the scenes, but their contribution to keeping people and communities safe is fundamental.

“On behalf of NFCC and the wider fire and rescue sector, thank you for your professionalism, resilience and commitment to public service. Your work makes a difference every single day.”

Did you know that creams applied for skin conditions like eczema can make clothing and bedding highly flammable?

While emollients themselves are not directly flammable, they can significantly increase the flammability of fabrics such as clothing, bedding, or bandages.

Anyone regularly using emollients should keep away from naked flames and other potential ignition sources, including smoking.

When cooking using gas or electric hobs, make sure you don’t wear clothes contaminated with emollients.

As Halloween and Bonfire Night approach, it's the perfect time to brush up on firework safety.

Today is National Burn Awareness Day 2026 . Fireworks can cause serious burn injuries, so the safest way to enjoy them is at an organised display.

Always supervise children around fireworks
Follow safety instructions carefully
Never return to a firework once it has been lit
