"Join the army, travel to distant lands, meet exciting new people...and kill them"

Today a small group of Defend Education activists (and couple of random Quakers :P ) were able to temporarily shut down an event the Army were holding outside the Guild of Students.

The Army has no place on our campus.
- We oppose the high levels of r**e and sexual assault that goes on in the army and how little the institution does about it.
- We oppose the neo-imperial wars conducted by the army.
- We oppose the murder of people in the global south

Good coverage in this Birmingham Mail article about Saturday's sit in at the Library of Birmingham. A couple of clarifications: Defend Education were only one of the groups involved (although we were, arguably, the most enthusiastic tweeters). Secondly the police were at the sit-in for all of two minutes.

Still pretty cool to say you were part of an occupation of the biggest public library in Europe

This evening, the 10th October, following a rally outside the Library of Birmingham a group of 25-30 students, activists, and service users took part in a sit in occupation inside the library. In protest against the shortening of the hours, redundancies, withdrawal of services, and continued involvement of private corporations such as Google, the group took part in music, poetry readings, and other activities. In what was described as a “festival of protest” the group stayed into the evening demanding the reversal of cuts and removal of private interest, demanding that the Library of Birmingham should become a truly people's library.
