Congratulations to the incredible Patrice Lawrence MBE on her appointment as the new Waterstones Children’s Laureate 2026-2028.
Patrice’s laureateship will focus on the role stories can play in helping children find their place in the world, working with communities across the UK to explore how sharing stories can connect us, support our wellbeing and foster positive relationships.
Through her dedication to empowering children, young people and adults with diverse experiences and from diverse backgrounds to tell their stories, the National Literacy Trust has seen firsthand how Patrice’s advocacy can change life stories through her support of its work in schools, communities and the criminal justice system.
In the National Year of Reading 2026, Patrice’s ambition to “create a national conversation that champions the benefits of shared reading and sociable reading experiences” will further fuel the campaign as it continues to galvanise volunteers, communities, schools and partners to inspire the nation to discover the joy of reading and embed it in everyday life.
We’d also like to say a huge thank you to the outgoing Waterstones Children’s Laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce, who is also a National Year of Reading ambassador, for his tireless work to champion the importance of reading for children’s wellbeing, happiness and life chances, particularly in the early years where these foundations are crucially built.
