Blyth Town Council This page is for informational purposes only. Contact us by email via [email protected] Blyth Town Council was inaugurated in April 2009..

Blyth Town Council is a Community Council at the most local level of Government. We provide an expanding number of services, events and also a voice for the residents of Blyth delivered with local knowledge and commitment. The first election to the Council was held on 4th June 2009. The Town Council was formed to fill a democratic deficit left on the creation of the newly-formed unitary authority Northumberland County Council. This had replaced the previous Northumberland County Council and six district councils within the county, one of which was Blyth Valley Borough Council. The Wards and your Town Councillors are as follows:

Cowpen - Cllr A Barrass & Cllr B Erskine

Croft - Cllr K Nisbet & Cllr M Richardson Mayor

Isabella - Cllr J Potts & Cllr A Watson

Kitty Brewster - Cllr G Davey & Cllr S Davey

Newsham - Cllr M Robson & Cllr C Humphrey

Plessey - Cllr S Stanger & Cllr J Reid

South Blyth - Cllr D Carr & Cllr C Jones

Wensleydale - Cllr A Cartie & Cllr W Taylor

🎉 Blyth is open for business! 🎉

We’re delighted to have submitted an entry in the High Street Revival category of the Let’s Celebrate Town Fund, with the chance to win £20,000! 🤞

Our bid isn’t claiming we revived the town centre itself, it's about celebrating the activities, events and community spirit that keep Blyth thriving while redevelopment and disruption take place.

🎪 Our events encourage people to visit the town centre.
🛍️ They help support the local businesses that are here today.
❤️ And, most importantly, they send a clear message: Blyth is open for business!

As the town centre goes through a period of change, it’s more important than ever to keep people coming into town, supporting our traders and enjoying everything Blyth has to offer. If our bid is successful, the £20,000 will be used to fund even more activities in Blyth town centre, bringing people together, and encouraging more footfall.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our town, our events and our fantastic local businesses. Let’s keep Blyth buzzing! 🙌

🏡 Northumberland Local Plan review: what does the new land assessment mean for Blyth?

Northumberland County Council has published a new Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (HELAA) as part of its review of the Local Plan.

To meet UK Government housing targets, the Northumberland County Council needs to plan for around 34,000 homes over the next 20 years. This means most, if not all, parishes across Northumberland may be considered for potential future development.

📌 The HELAA is an assessment of land availability — it is not a decision to build houses. Identifying land does not mean development will automatically happen, or that there are immediate plans to build in every parish.

This is also not yet the public consultation stage of the Local Plan. Northumberland County Council is gathering evidence and consulting with Blyth Town Council to understand its preferences on potential future housing development.

Blyth Town Council will factor the content of the Blyth Neighbourhood Plan into any response, helping ensure local planning priorities are considered.

Any future formal public consultation on the Local Plan will provide an opportunity for residents and communities to have their say. Individual housing proposals would also need to go through the planning system, with further opportunities for public comment.

The HELAA is an early step in the process, and the location, scale and timing of future housing development have yet to be decided.

You can find out more about the HELAA on the following link:

🏛️ Could we be more ambitious for Blyth? ❤️

One comment from our Your Voice, Blyth’s Future survey recently caught our attention:

💬 “Blyth Town Council does some positive work supporting community activities, local heritage and the appearance of our public spaces. However, I believe there is an opportunity to be more ambitious.”

Recently, we unveiled a blue plaque at North Farm, celebrating Blyth’s heritage. The event was very well attended — showing there’s real interest in celebrating our town’s history!
