GHG Legal Consultant protects your rights, challenges police conduct, & supports you every stage of the way! Hi, I’m Gail Hadfield‑Grainger. In 2012, I lost my partner, Anthony, to a fatal police shooting—an experience that transformed me from victim to voice. As an Accredited Police Station Representative with degrees in Law, Criminology, and a Master’s in Criminal Justice, I help people who need justice and fairness. I believe that legal support should feel like a conversation—not an interrogation—and that justice is about people, not jargon.

𝐌𝐘 𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐃 𝐇𝐀𝐒 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐃. 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐃𝐎 𝐈 𝐃𝐎?
Imagine receiving that phone call.

Your son or daughter is at a police station.

You're worried, upset and probably imagining the worst.

❌First, don't panic.

𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖.
For children under 18, the police must arrange for an appropriate adult to provide additional safeguards during relevant custody procedures.

That might be a parent, guardian or another suitable person.

An appropriate adult is not the same as a legal representative.

𝐀 𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐃 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐁𝐎𝐓𝐇.
A child in police custody has the right to free, independent legal advice, and additional safeguards apply to police interviews.

The appropriate adult's role includes helping the child understand what is happening and ensuring their rights are respected.

𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬:
Being arrested doesn't mean your child has been found guilty.

As an accredited Police Station Representative, I believe that understanding the process is especially important when young people are involved.

Every young person deserves to be treated fairly, regardless of their background, family circumstances or postcode.

Those words mean an awful lot to me.

Because I've seen how differently people can experience the criminal justice system.

- Some people know exactly who to telephone when something goes wrong.
- They know their rights.
- They understand the legal process.
- They have people around them who can help.

❌Others have none of those advantages.

And when the police become involved, that difference can matter enormously.

𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞.
Neither should your education, income, background or ability to understand complicated legal language.

It's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about criminal defence, legal representation and police accountability.

I have a strong provable history of challenging difficult questions about policing and accountability, and I believe scrutiny of public authorities is essential to public confidence. We have to stand tall and be the voice for others!

But accountability isn't just about major inquiries or high-profile cases.

It's also about the person sitting in a police interview room who doesn't understand what's happening.

🚔 𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐃? 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐃𝐎𝐄𝐒𝐍'𝐓 𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐋𝐓𝐘.

Imagine being arrested, placed in a cell and questioned about something you may or may not have done.

Now imagine everyone treating you as though they've already decided the outcome.

❌ That's not how justice should work.

**𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖?**

✅ Legal advice at the police station is generally FREE.
✅ You can request a particular solicitor or firm.
✅ You have the right to be treated fairly, regardless of the allegation.

𝐈𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐎𝐋𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐂𝐊 𝐎𝐍 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐃𝐎𝐎𝐑, 𝐃𝐎 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐎 𝐋𝐄𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐌 𝐈𝐍?

❌ Not always.
And this is where understanding your rights really matters.

Police officers don't have an automatic right to enter your home simply because they're wearing a uniform.

But there are circumstances where they can enter without your permission.

𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐄𝐗𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐋𝐄:
Under section 17 of PACE, officers may have powers to enter premises for certain purposes, including arresting someone for an indictable offence or saving life or limb.

Police may also enter under a valid search warrant or other statutory powers.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

📣Stay calm.
📣Ask why officers want to enter.
📣Ask whether they have a warrant or are relying on another legal power.
📣Don't physically obstruct officers exercising lawful powers.
📣And if you're arrested, request legal representation.

You don't need to know every section of PACE.

But you should know that police powers have legal limits.

“𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐎𝐋𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐎𝐍𝐋𝐘 𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝟐𝟒 𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒, 𝐂𝐀𝐍'𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘?”
Not necessarily.

This is one of those things everybody thinks they know.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐒:
📌For most offences, the usual maximum period of police detention without charge is 24 hours, calculated under the PACE custody rules.
📌For an indictable offence, a superintendent or above can authorise an extension to 36 hours if the statutory conditions are met.
📌A magistrates' court can authorise further detention, potentially taking the total to 96 hours.

Different rules apply to certain terrorism investigations.

𝐁𝐔𝐓 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄'𝐒 𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐄𝐋𝐒𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖.
📌Police detention must be justified and kept under review.
📌You also have rights concerning legal advice, medical assistance and having someone informed of your arrest, subject to lawful exceptions.
📌Being in custody doesn't mean your rights disappear.
📌And being accused of an offence doesn't mean you've been convicted of one.

I work in police station representation because these protections matter.

Justice starts long before anyone enters a courtroom.

🚔 ARRESTED?
❓HERE ARE FIVE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW.

Most people never expect to find themselves in a police custody suite.

But if it happens, knowing a few basic rights can make an enormous difference.

𝟏. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞.
You don't need to have money in the bank to qualify.

𝟐. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬.
There are limited circumstances where this can be delayed.

𝟑. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞.
If you're unwell, injured or need medication, tell the custody officer.

𝟒. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰.
They're called the PACE Codes of Practice.

𝟓. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐞.
You should be able to understand what's happening to you.

These aren't special favours.

They're legal rights.

I strongly believe that knowing your rights shouldn't depend on your education, background or whether you've ever had dealings with the police.

Save this post.
You might never need it, but somebody close to you might.

⚖️ "WHY WOULD I ASK FOR YOU WHEN I CAN HAVE THE DUTY SOLICITOR?"

Fair question. And one I'm happy to answer.

First, let's get something straight.

Duty solicitors are independent of the police, and many are excellent at what they do.

But here's something people don't always realise.

You can ask for a particular solicitor or legal representative through the appropriate arrangements.

❓So why might you contact me❓

Because you can get to know who I am before you ever need me.

You can see what I stand for, what I believe in and why I'm so passionate about ensuring people are treated fairly.

I'm a fully accredited Police Station Representative. I work alongside Central Chambers Law and have professional connections with other firms across Manchester, Salford and the North West.

My interest in criminal justice isn't simply about earning a living.

It's about accountability. It's about fairness. And it's about making sure people understand that having rights means being able to exercise them.

You don't have to wait until you're in a custody cell to find out who you want representing you.

Follow my page.
Get to know me.
And if you ever need criminal defence assistance, you'll know where to start.
