Health and Safety Executive The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety.

We aim to reduce work-related death, injury and ill health in Great Britain. To help us do this, we carry out research, provide information and advice, promote training and propose regulations and codes of practice. We also work with local authorities to enforce health and safety standards, carrying out inspections and investigations, and taking enforcement action, including prosecuting cases through the courts.

WATCH: CCTV captures the moment a young worker was seriously injured when his ride-on pallet truck collided with a forklift truck in a Barnsley warehouse.

An HSE investigation led to bed spring manufacturer Leggett & Platt Components Europe Limited being fined after inspectors discovered the company had changed its workplace transport routes to accommodate installation works, meaning pallet trucks and forklifts had to share the same route through a busy loading area, with limited visibility and more vehicle movements.

The effects of vibration exposure can last a lifetime.

Regular use of power tools, vibrating equipment and machinery can cause serious, permanent health conditions, including hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), reduced grip strength and loss of hand function.

The good news? Most of this harm is preventable with the right controls.
Control exposure. Protect your workers.

Does the legal duty to manage asbestos in buildings fall to you?

If you’re responsible for the maintenance or repair of a non-domestic building or the common parts of a multi-occupancy domestic building, you may have a legal duty to manage asbestos.

Not sure whether you’re responsible?

Spot the warning signs.
Noise and vibration risks aren't always obvious. Knowing what to look for can help prevent permanent harm.
Could your workers be at risk without you realising it?
Power tools. Vibrating equipment. Machinery. Mobile plant. Heavy vehicles.
If workers need to raise their voices to communicate, or regularly use vibrating tools, they could be at risk of permanent hearing damage or hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).
Assess the risks. Control the exposure. Take action before harm occurs.

The dust generated by cutting and polishing engineered stone is abrasive and drying when in contact with skin. Wet working can also cause dermatitis.

Signs of skin issues and dermatitis to watch for and report:

👉 Itching
👉 Scaling/flaking
👉Dry or cracking skin
👉Skin colour changes
👉Blistering
👉Weeping
👉Soreness

Your employer should provide regular health checks, also called health surveillance, at least annually.

Protect your hands by wearing gloves. Wash with warm water and mild cleansers. Be sure to dry your hands properly and use barrier creams.

Every year, 15,000 workers develop hearing problems caused or made worse by workplace noise.

As part of HSE's new noise and vibration campaign, we're reminding employers of the importance of managing noise risks at work.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 require employers to take action when workers are exposed to noise levels of 80 dB(A) or above, with additional controls required at 85 dB(A).

If workers need to raise their voices to communicate, it's time to assess noise exposure.

Assess. Control. Protect.

A vehicle recovery driver has been sentenced after a Range Rover he failed to secure properly rolled out of control during a recovery operation in Bournemouth, dragging him beneath the vehicle before seriously injuring a member of the public who tried to help.

Sean Baker was attempting to recover the vehicle on a steep hill when it rolled away. The footage shows him being dragged beneath the Range Rover as it travelled downhill.

Kai Dransfield, who was on a break from work nearby, witnessed the incident unfold and described Mr Baker as “hanging on for dear life”. In attempting to help, Mr Dransfield was struck by the vehicle and pulled underneath it, suffering broken bones in his legs and fractures to his spine.

Our investigation found that the Range Rover had not been properly secured before being placed onto skates. The winch that would have prevented the vehicle rolling away had been removed and no chocks or breakaway cables were in place.

HSE Inspector Alexander Ashen said:

“Sean Baker was an experienced recovery driver with years of experience. Failing to properly secure a vehicle weighing more than two tonnes on a steep hill was a fundamental error.

“This happened in a busy town centre, close to restaurants and car parks, with vehicles, motorcyclists and pedestrians regularly passing through the area.

“Sean Baker's failings were substantial. They exposed everyone nearby to risk and resulted in a member of the public, who stepped in to help, suffering life-changing injuries.”
