🎀 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗜𝘁 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝗸 – 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀

Today we're supporting Wear It Pink, raising awareness of breast cancer and helping to support vital research and services for people affected by the disease.

Wearing pink might be a simple action, but the message behind it is important: raise awareness, know your body, recognise possible changes and seek medical advice when something doesn't feel right.

🎀 Be breast aware

Breast cancer can cause a number of different signs and symptoms. Changes to look out for can include:

• A new lump or swelling in the breast, upper chest or armpit
• Changes in the size or shape of a breast
• Changes to the skin, such as dimpling or puckering
• Changes to the ni**le, including inversion or a rash
• Unusual ni**le discharge
• Persistent pain in the breast or armpit
• Any other new or unusual change

Most breast changes will not be cancer, but it's important to get new or unusual changes checked by a healthcare professional.

💗 Early recognition matters

Knowing what is normal for your body can make it easier to notice when something changes. Breast awareness isn't about following a complicated routine—it's about regularly being aware of how your breasts normally look and feel.

If you notice something unusual, don't ignore it or feel embarrassed about seeking advice.

💗 Why do we Wear It Pink?

Wear It Pink brings people together in workplaces, schools and communities to raise money for Breast Cancer Now, supporting breast cancer research and people affected by the disease.

Whether you're wearing pink, organising a workplace fundraiser, making a donation or simply sharing reliable information, every conversation can help increase awareness.

For healthcare professionals, it's also an opportunity to reinforce the importance of patient education, compassionate communication, early recognition and person-centred care.

🎀 Wear pink. Raise awareness. Support research. Start conversations.

Together, we can help ensure more people understand the signs and feel confident seeking medical advice when they notice a change.

𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲

There is no single approach to managing menopause symptoms that is right for everyone.

Support should be based on the individual's symptoms, medical history, preferences and circumstances.

Depending on the person, conversations with healthcare professionals may include:
• Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
• Non-hormonal treatment options
• Support for vaginal and urinary symptoms
• Mental health and emotional wellbeing
• Sleep
• Physical activity
• Nutrition
• Smoking and alcohol
• Bone and cardiovascular health

HRT can be an effective treatment for many menopause symptoms, but treatment decisions should be made through an informed discussion with an appropriate healthcare professional about individual benefits and risks.

Person-centred menopause care means giving people reliable information and involving them in decisions about their own health.

Healthcare professionals can help by:
✔ Listening carefully to symptoms and concerns
✔ Providing evidence-based information
✔ Avoiding assumptions about treatment preferences
✔ Discussing available options
✔ Reviewing treatment and symptoms when appropriate
✔ Signposting to reliable sources of information and support

💜 Good menopause care starts with listening and shared decision-making.

𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

Cancer treatment can be physically and emotionally demanding.

Healthcare professionals can make a difference through effective communication, symptom management, infection prevention, emotional support and appropriate signposting.

Small acts of compassion can have a significant impact on someone's healthcare experience.

𝗠𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 💼

Menopause symptoms don't stop when someone arrives at work.

Hot flushes, fatigue, poor sleep, headaches, anxiety, difficulty concentrating and other symptoms can affect comfort, confidence and someone's experience at work.

A supportive workplace doesn't require managers to become menopause experts. It requires understanding, open communication and a willingness to consider reasonable practical support.

Helpful workplace measures could include:
• Access to drinking water
• Comfortable temperatures or ventilation
• Easy access to toilet facilities
• Flexibility around breaks
• Appropriate uniforms or clothing
• Flexible working arrangements where possible
• Quiet spaces when needed
• Supportive conversations with managers
• Clear menopause and wellbeing policies

Managers should also remember that menopause is personal. Some employees may be comfortable discussing their experience, while others may prefer privacy.

Creating a culture where people feel able to ask for support without embarrassment or judgement can make a significant difference.

💜 Awareness creates understanding. Understanding creates better workplaces.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲

A breast cancer diagnosis can affect physical health, emotional wellbeing, relationships, employment and family life.

Person-centred care means:
🎀 Listening without judgement
🎀 Communicating clearly
🎀 Respecting individual choices
🎀 Supporting emotional wellbeing
🎀 Involving patients in decisions about their care

Good healthcare treats the person, not simply the diagnosis.

𝗠𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 🧠

The emotional and psychological effects of menopause deserve just as much attention as the physical symptoms.

During perimenopause and menopause, some people may experience:
• Anxiety
• Low mood
• Mood changes
• Irritability
• Reduced confidence
• Difficulty concentrating
• Memory problems or "brain fog"
• Sleep difficulties
• Feeling overwhelmed

Poor sleep, physical symptoms and pressures at home or work can also affect someone's emotional wellbeing.

For healthcare professionals, it is important to consider the whole person rather than looking at individual symptoms in isolation.

Good support begins with listening.

💜 Take concerns seriously
💜 Avoid dismissing symptoms as "just ageing"
💜 Ask how symptoms are affecting everyday life
💜 Discuss appropriate treatment and support
💜 Consider mental wellbeing alongside physical health

If someone is experiencing persistent low mood, anxiety or other mental health concerns, they should be encouraged to seek appropriate professional support.

Menopause is a health issue that deserves informed, compassionate conversations.

𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀

Being breast aware means knowing what is normal for you and reporting unusual changes.

Healthcare professionals have an important role in listening to concerns, assessing symptoms appropriately and ensuring patients understand the next steps in their care.

Education can help people feel more confident about seeking medical advice.
