Those who break the rules must face consequences.

Yet a small minority of travellers are getting away with unauthorised development that would never be tolerated elsewhere. This is unfair.

The next Conservative Government will end the two-tier treatment of traveller lawbreaking and ensure the rules are enforced fairly.

Our plan will give police and councils stronger powers to remove unauthorised encampments, tackle trespass and stop the abuse of retrospective planning applications.

We will ensure councils act within 28 days of identifying an unauthorised residential caravan site, strengthen enforcement powers and restore protections for the Green Belt and open countryside.

We will also give police powers to remove trespassers at a landowner’s request, prevent travellers from returning to sites indefinitely and remove the requirement for an alternative pitch to be available before action can be taken.

One set of rules. Fair enforcement. Stronger powers for those responsible for enforcing the law.

Conservative response to screeching Labour u-turn on local government reorganisation ⬇️⬇️⬇️

David Simmonds MP, Shadow Local Government Minister, said:

“This is yet another total humiliation for this Labour Government, who have once again been exposed breaking the law in an attempt to force their top-down programme of local government reorganisation on communities.

“Ministers are only backing off because they have been found out in the face of relentless Conservative opposition to their gerrymandering. Their behaviour shows that Burnham and Rayner’s promise to empower local communities is completely hollow: their intention was always to dictate downwards.

“Labour should come clean and put all non-privileged documentation about this process in the public domain. The public have a right to know the truth.”
