🙌 🎉🥳 On the 21st October The crew from Brandon Fire Station was invited to Suffolk fire and rescue service Awards evening where we received the Miles Hammond Trophy alongside Mildenhall Fire Station 🙌 🎉🥳

This trophy is presented for a demonstration of excellence by an individual or team during an emergency incident.

On 29 January, crews from Brandon Fire Stations and Mildenhall demonstrated exceptional professionalism, courage, and teamwork during a life risk incident involving a fully developed building fire to the rear of Lakenheath High Street.

Upon arrival, both appliances were confronted with a rapidly developing fire displaying significant fire loading and intense radiated heat. Early actions and dynamic information gathering quickly made it evident that this incident involved a person trapped within the building, immediately escalating the risk profile and operational complexity.

Working seamlessly together under extreme conditions, firefighters from both crews located the casualty and commenced urgent rescue operations. Hydraulic rescue equipment was initially deployed; however, due to the construction and fortification of the external access point, crews were required to adapt their tactics and apply sustained manual force to gain entry.

Throughout this process, teams maintained effective suppression and shielding to protect both the casualty and rescuers from the severe effects of heat and fire spread.

Once access was achieved, the casualty was successfully removed from the building and brought to a place of relative safety. Firefighters then provided immediate casualty care and first aid and managing casualties injuries sustained because of the fire, until a structured and professional handover was completed with the ambulance service.

Given the extent of fire development and the seriousness of the injuries sustained, it is evident that without the crews’ prompt decision‑making, effective communication, and exemplary cooperation, the outcome could have been significantly worse. Their actions reflect the highest standards of emergency response and fully embody the values recognised by the Miles Hammond Trophy.

This is an excellent achievement and award for the crews involved to achieve, and shows the dedication and commitment to their role to protecting and saving lives,

🚒This evening we went over to Bury St Edmunds Fire Station for our quarterly breathing apparatus training.

The teams were given a scenario acting as a BA emergency team going into the smoke-filled building and carry out a search and rescue for a lost and distressed firefighter after sounding the Automatic Distress Signal Unit (ADSU) which is a loud high pitch signal from the lost firefighters BA set to help emergency teams locate them in zero visibility.

Upon finding the firefighter entangled in wiring the Emergency Air Supply Equipment (EASE) was deployed which is a fully charged air cylinder and a hose which connects to the distressed BA mask replenishing their air supply. Then the distressed firefighter was freed from the entanglement and escorted out of the building using pathfinding techniques.

Training like this is crucial to ensure firefighters stay proficient in search and rescue and be ready for any situation.🚒
