🏅 Celebrating Sporting Success in Brecon! 🏅

The Mayor was delighted to host a reception yesterday evening to congratulate the members of Brecon Integrated Sports Association who proudly represented Powys and Special Olympics Wales at the Special Olympics Great Britain National Summer Games 2026.

The team returned home with an impressive collection of gold, silver and bronze medals — a fantastic achievement and a testament to their talent, determination and hard work. 🥇🥈🥉

Congratulations to all the competitors on their outstanding success! 👏

The Mayor also took the opportunity to recognise and thank the dedicated coaches and volunteers whose commitment, encouragement and hard work provide invaluable support to the team and help make these achievements possible.

A wonderful celebration of sporting excellence, teamwork and community spirit. Well done to everyone involved! 🎉

116 children and 28 adults died 60 years ago today in the village of Aberfan, when tonnes of coal slurry slid onto their school and homes.

Please take a moment today to remember the lives lost on 21st October 1966. Our hearts are with you Aberfan ❤️

🌿 Improvements at Island Fields! 🌱

You may have noticed some more improvements starting to take shape at Island Fields....For the past few months, our dedicated team of volunteers has been working incredibly hard to clear overgrowth and remove non-native species from the site, helping to improve and enhance this much-loved public space.

Yesterday, native wildflower bulbs were planted in one of the newly cleared woodland areas, an exciting step in encouraging native wildlife and enhancing the natural beauty of the site. 🌼

Alongside this, work funded by a grant from Welsh Government's Local Places for Nature programme has begun. Wider grass paths have been cut at the site and next week work will begin to create a firmer path surfaces along the northern and eastern boundaries.

We’ll share further updates as the work progresses, but in the meantime, we’d like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all our wonderful volunteers who have given so much of their time, energy and hard work to help care for and improve Island Fields. Your efforts are making a real difference, and they’re very much appreciated. 💚👏
