This time of year sees our Hindu communities celebrate Raksha Bandhan. It is a festival that celebrates the duty of care, the obligation to serve those in need, and to celebrate the relationships we hold dear to one another. The festitval is steeped in history. It is a symbol of the vow of protection of the wider family and to that of the whole community.

Today, we at Brough Fire Station were honoured by the presence of the children and parents of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh - Hull; who kindly presented us each with a Rakhi (A cotton thread that symbolises the universal connectedness to serve and protect each other) as a gesture of gratitude for all that the emergency services do for us all in the community. In turn, they vow to try and serve their community as we do.

It was a great honour to have received their kind blessings and we hope they enjoyed a look around our station and Fire engines as well.

Today, we came together to observe a minute’s silence in remembrance of all those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.

We especially remember the firefighters, police officers, paramedics and other emergency workers who ran towards danger while others were trying to escape.

343 firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice that day, alongside members of other emergency services who gave their lives while trying to save others.

We remember their courage, their selflessness and their sacrifice, as well as the thousands of innocent people whose lives were lost and the families, friends and colleagues they left behind.

25 years on, we remember.

Lastnight we were able to use Humber Enterprise Park for some Search and Rescue training. Simulated Fire within a building, persons reported and one that had fled the scene. BA team located 2 'casualties' in the building and the service drone was used to search the old airfield for the missing person.

We all have that one drawer or a box somewhere, it may be in the garage, shed or loft.

You know the one.

It's full of old charging cables, spare batteries, mystery plugs, an old phone that "might come in handy one day" and gadgets you've completely forgotten about.

Take a moment and think:

Do you know what every charging cable in that drawer belongs to?
Do you still use the device it charges?
If not, it might be time for a clear-out.

Many of the electrical items we keep tucked away contain batteries. When batteries or battery-powered devices are thrown into household bins, they can be crushed during collection and processing, causing fires.

In fact, more than 1,200 battery fires were recorded in UK bin lorries and waste facilities in a single year, highlighting the growing problem of batteries being disposed of incorrectly.

What should I recycle?

Many everyday items contain batteries, including:

Mobile phones
Tablets and laptops
Wireless earbuds/headphones
Smart watches
Power banks
Electric toothbrushes
Some children’s toys
Vapes
Rechargeable household gadgets
What should I do?

✅ Recycle loose batteries at battery collection points, often found in supermarkets and other retailers.

✅ Recycle unwanted electrical items separately through your local recycling centre or participating retailer.

✅ Check old devices before deciding to throw away. Many contain hidden rechargeable batteries that can be recycled.

🚫 Never place batteries or battery-powered devices in your household bin, a public bin or skip.

It only takes a few minutes, but it can help prevent fires, protect waste and recycling crews, firefighters and keep valuable materials in use for longer.

Thank you for helping keep batteries out of bins
