πŸš’ Tonight’s drill: Water rescue 🌊
We couldn’t get down to a local river, so we brought one to the station! With a little imagination and some chalk on the drill ground, we created our own river to practise rescue techniques and throw-line skills.
The crew also got hands-on with our water rescue PPE, helping everyone become familiar with the equipment we may need to use. πŸš’ 🌊 🏊

Tonight at drill night, we were pleased to welcome Deputy Chief Fire Officer Gerald Taylor, who presented our very own Dave Wood with his 40 years’ service recognition.
Dave is now in his 43rd year at Buckfastleigh and is a valued, fundamental part of our crew.
Congratulations Dave on this incredible milestone and we look forward to many more years working alongside you. πŸš’πŸ‘

πŸš’ A busy morning for our crews.

At 04:11 we were called by the police to a car fire in the Aish area of South Brent. On arrival, we found a car on its roof in a narrow country lane. Two breathing apparatus wearers used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.
The car was blocking the road, and the lanes were too tight to turn around, so our fire appliance had to reverse for approximately a mile to reach a safe turning point.
As the pictures show, it was a tight squeeze!
After returning to station, we were called later in the morning to a road traffic collision on the A38, where a car had left the highway near Drumbridges and overturned. We attended alongside Ashburton and Newton Abbot Fire Stations, police, HART (Hazardous Area Response Team), ambulance crews and highways officers.
The road was closed to allow the air ambulance to land on the B carriageway.
We wish everyone involved in the collision a speedy recovery.
Thank you to everyone caught up in the traffic for your patience and understanding. πŸš’

πŸ”₯ Tonight’s Drill Night πŸ”₯

Tonight, our crews practised branch control techniques before undertaking a Breathing Apparatus (BA) drill within the station.
Branch control techniques are an important part of firefighting, helping crews to control and cool the hot gases within a fire compartment.
By applying the correct amount of water in the right way, firefighters can reduce temperatures and create safer conditions to move through a building.
This allows BA crews to progress safely, locate the fire and extinguish it effectively while using water as efficiently as possible.
Regular training like this helps ensure our crews are prepared, confident and ready when called upon. πŸš’πŸ”₯

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ We Will Remember Them πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
Today, at exactly 13:46 hours, we stood together in silence to remember the emergency service personnel and all those who lost their lives in the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
Our minute’s silence was held at the exact time, UK time, that the first aircraft struck the North Tower 25 years ago.
We remember the firefighters, police officers, paramedics and countless others who went towards danger when others were trying to escape.
Their courage, sacrifice and dedication will never be forgotten.
We will remember them. πŸš’πŸ•―οΈ

πŸš’ Two Incidents for Buckfastleigh Fire Station Today πŸš’

Today our crews have attended two very different incidents.

🌧️ Flooding at Buckfastleigh Town Hall
Our first call was to reports of water entering the Town Hall following damage to the guttering system. The water had begun entering the building and was affecting the electrics.

Crews made the electrics safe before using a 13.5m ladder to gain access to the roof and carry out a temporary repair to the guttering, helping to prevent further water entering the building during periods of heavy rainfall.

πŸ”₯ Industrial Grass Cutter Fire – A38 Marley Head Junction
Our second incident was to an industrial grass-cutting vehicle on fire at the Marley Head junction of the A38.

The vehicle, which was being used by Devon Highways to cut the roadside verges, had caught fire.

We were joined by our colleagues from Ashburton Fire Station and a water bowser from Crownhill Fire Station.

Crews wearing two breathing apparatus used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire, before using a thermal imaging camera to check for any remaining hotspots and ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

πŸ”₯ Fire in the Open – Working Together with Our Farming Community πŸšœπŸ’§

Yesterday, we were called to a fire in the open involving a large pile of tree stumps and logs.
Our crew was tasked with establishing a water sector, securing a reliable water supply from a nearby open water source using our portable pump.

To allow us to properly access the seat of the fire and expose hidden hot spots beneath the pile, the affected timber was moved using farm machinery to an area where crews could thoroughly damp it down and ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

🚜 A huge thank you to our farming community.
Throughout Devon and Somerset, and indeed across the country, many farmers have stepped forward during the recent dry spells to support their local fire crews at vegetation and countryside fires.
Their machinery, local knowledge and, importantly, their skill in operating that machinery can make a huge difference at incidents like these β€” helping us gain access, bring fires under control and protect the surrounding environment.
We are extremely grateful to all those farmers who continue to work alongside the Fire & Rescue Service when we need them. πŸ‘πŸš’

Thank you for your support.

πŸ”₯ A38 GRASS FIRE πŸ”₯

Today at approximately 2.30pm, we were called alongside our colleagues from Ashburton Fire Station and Ivybridge Fire Station, with additional support from a water bowser from Torquay Fire Station, to reports of a grass fire close to the A38.

The fire had spread into the central reservation, producing large plumes of smoke which drifted across both carriageways and caused extremely poor visibility for motorists. πŸš’πŸ’¨

On arrival, the Officer in Charge committed crews from both sides of the A38, with one appliance tackling the fire from the Plymouth-bound carriageway and another from the Exeter-bound carriageway.

Crews used hose reel jets and beaters to bring the fire under control as quickly as possible. We were also grateful for the assistance of a local farmer, who used his own bowser containing water and slurry to help dampen down the affected area. πŸšœπŸ’¦

Our appliances were replenished with water by the bowser from Torquay, allowing crews to continue firefighting operations and get the road reopened as quickly and safely as possible.

πŸ‘ A big thank you to all the motorists caught up in the traffic for your patience and understanding.

We would also like to thank the Police and Highways Agency for their assistance. Their support with traffic management and scene safety allows incidents like this to be dealt with as safely as possible for both our firefighters and members of the public.

πŸ”₯ With vegetation currently extremely dry, fires can spread very quickly β€” please take extra care when out and about.

πŸ”₯ INCIDENT – SOUTH BRENT πŸ”₯
Today we were called to reports of an electrical pole on fire in the South Brent area.
On arrival, crews found that an automatic re-closer at the top of an electrical pole, located within a field, had caught fire.
The fire had spread to the surrounding field, and crews quickly got to work using beaters to prevent it from escalating further.
With vegetation extremely dry at the moment, fires can spread very quickly, so crews worked swiftly to bring the incident under control and prevent further spread.
National Grid attended and isolated the power to the pole enabling them to start the repair. πŸš’πŸ”₯
