Friesland Farm is mainly a DIY livery yard, but as I am here all day we also grow our own veg and fruit & herbs, keep chickens, ducks & geese for eggs, and raise livestock for meat on a small scale.

I am a bit late to the party in this one mostly because I have not felt well for a few weeks and quite frankly ‘couldn’t be arsed’ 🤪
But I finally got round to making our Christmas cake!
I have used the basis of Mary Berry’s Christmas cake, she is the queen of cakes after all but I do adapt to whatever I have available and this year some of my home grown and dried apricots have gone into the mix.
It is worth noting that a heavy fruit cake like this that is then laced with alcohol has an excellent shelf life of several months. This makes it a fabulous addition to a resilient food store, if it lasts that long 😉 You could make several smaller ones as part of your rotation and despite what you might think it is not difficult, just a process of soaking the fruit for 24 hrs before measuring out ingredients and mixing up before cooking that’s it. You still have time 😊

Soup season 🥰
A fabulous season where you can get all kinds of vegetables into unsuspecting eaters 😂

My soup today uses leeks, celery, broccoli (just the stalks though) garlic, mixed herbs, stock and some left over mashed potato.

Have you connected the dots yet?

For almost two decades I’ve been gently saying the same thing on here:
strong local systems matter.
Buying local, supporting local producers, keeping money circulating in our own towns, and growing even a little of your own food, these things are not just niche, nice ideas! They’re the foundations of a resilient community.

Back then, my worry was simple: supermarkets (apart from selling you ultra processed food) where a ‘just in time’ supply chain.
Everything depends on huge central warehouses, long transport routes, and online systems that have to work perfectly every single day. If anything happens the shelves empty fast.

Now, our government (as well as many other governments) are openly advising people to keep extra supplies at home. Not because anyone expects disaster tomorrow, but because the systems we rely on are more vulnerable than most people realise, especially the digital ones. A lot of our food, fuel, and logistics depend on online networks that can be disrupted far more easily than the old, slower, local ways.

This is exactly why I’ve been saying for years:

Local producers give you a choice, local spending strengthens local jobs, local food reduces dependence on fragile supply chains!
Even growing a small amount at home gives you stability and peace of mind.

It’s about common sense and community strength.

When we support local farms, makers, shops, and growers, we’re not just buying a product, we’re keeping skills alive, keeping supply close to home, and building a buffer against the kind of vulnerabilities we’re now being told to prepare for.

Local isn’t a trend.
Local is resilience.
And it’s something we can choose every single day.

Build local community resilience, support your local grower/producer.

Please note I have now removed the pay pal option from the QR code payment because it’s too costly!
You can still use the QR code with Apple Pay, google pay or just your card payment.

I dont know how the weather is going to pan out over the Winter or next year but there is a lot of talk about it.

I do know that last year was dry and this year was worse and that the farmers are constantly warning about the knock on effects of this.

Growing your own is easier than you might think and you don’t need masses of space or a vegetable garden for it.
Next year I am planning on growing things like French beans in amongst my flowers and shrubs.

You might not like runner beans or French beans as a green but having you considered growing them to maturity and then drying the beans themselves?
You can do this with kidney beans, haricot beans (think baked beans) Broad beans dried become fava beans (technically it should be field beans but broad beans work as well) Butterbeans and even chick peas! Grow your own endemame beans or soya beans, the latter loves the heat so it’s a win win.

A big spend does not mean the food costs more.

I went to a local butcher this morning and bought a fair amount of chicken and beef in various forms including whole chickens and a couple of pieces of roasting beef. I also bought mince, diced beef, chicken thighs and chicken breast.

At first glance the total looks high but once I have divided/diced/portioned it up the cost becomes very good value per person for quality meat.

I am pressure canning some diced beef, mince beef and I diced the chicken breast for canning as well.
Chicken thighs, minced beef and diced beef were also vacuum packed into portions for the freezer. The whole chickens and beef joints will stay whole for roasting but I will get two meals for 2 people out of the beef joints (if not more) the same for the whole chicken plus a carcass for soup or stock.

So my initial outlay breaks down into £2.79 per portion which is not bad.

The two different storage methods give me options, if I remember to get something out of the freezer in the morning all well and good. If I forget or I am very busy I can grab something off the shelf instead.
