Shaping What's Next

Featuring Penny Wilson's Great Trustee Treasure Hunt workshop

Thursday 26 November 2026
Haywards Heath College
3.00pm arrival | 3.15pm start | 5.30pm finish

This year's AGM will focus on inclusion, exploring how we can create more opportunities for people from all backgrounds to volunteer, become trustees and help strengthen our communities.

Together, we'll celebrate Community People's impact during 2025/2026, hear from local trustees and provide opportunities for you to help shape our priorities beyond 2027.

We're delighted that Penny Wilson will be leading a session on The Great Trustee Treasure Hunt! Penny is an inclusive charity governance consultant, Director of the Festival of Trusteeship, trustee of London Plus and the Association of Chairs, and former CEO of Getting On Board. You'll leave with practical ideas, useful tools, valuable new connections, and increased confidence to strengthen governance, recruit and retain trustees, and support your organisation to thrive.

On Thursday 15th October, we welcomed 25 attendees from organisations supporting older people across Mid Sussex and beyond to Kings Weald Community Centre. The session focused on Falls Prevention, exploring its impact on older people’s wellbeing, independence and social connections.

We heard valuable insights from Val Upton (MSOPC), Sharni Prentice (Places Leisure), Phil Mockett (Community Link) and Henry McLaughlin (West Sussex County Council). Together, we discussed the barriers older people face, the importance of positive language and how we can work together to provide better support.

Our Older People’s Forum is held in conjunction with Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove, bringing organisations together to share knowledge and better support older people in our communities.

A big thank you to our speakers and everyone who joined us for such an insightful session!

A quick statistic from our latest community listening project as part of our On Your Doorstep Project, funded by Adur & Worthing Councils’ Thriving Together Grant: Only 7 of the 116 people we spoke to told us Eastbrook wasn't for them.

The bigger story was everything else we heard. People talked about wanting places to meet neighbours, activities for young people, creative groups, somewhere welcoming to spend time, opportunities to learn new skills, share hobbies and feel part of the community.

When 60% of residents say they would attend or might attend an event, that's encouraging. But what mattered most was the quality of the conversations behind the numbers. One resident suggested a repair café. Another wanted activities for newly retired people. Others talked about youth clubs, choirs, board games, dance, art and community projects.

People care about Fishersgate. People care about Eastbrook. And people want to be involved in shaping what happens next.

When we knocked on doors around Eastbrook Manor Community Centre, we expected to hear ideas. What we didn't expect was how many people would be pleased that someone had come to ask. Over two days we spoke to 116 local residents. Sixty per cent said they would attend or might attend a future event at Eastbrook. Most people who couldn't come weren't saying they didn't want to. They were juggling work, caring responsibilities, appointments and busy lives.

We also found that Eastbrook is already a familiar place for many local people. Lots of residents knew about it, and many had used it before. The conversations went far beyond whether people would come to an event. Residents shared ideas for youth activities, social groups, creative projects, wellbeing support, community events and ways to bring neighbours together.

Thank you to everyone who opened their door and shared their thoughts. You've given us plenty to think about and a strong starting point for the next stages of our latest community listening project as part of our On Your Doorstep Project, funded by Adur & Worthing Councils’ Thriving Together Grant.
