Velindre Matters Velindre Matters gives updates on our new Velindre Cancer Centre More and more of us are being diagnosed with cancer, and people are living longer with cancer.

For nearly 70 years, the Velindre Cancer Centre has offered vital specialist cancer treatment and support to people across south Wales. We are proud of our history, but we are constantly evolving to meet the growing demands for cancer services. Now more than ever, we need to adapt to make sure we continue to provide the world-class care Velindre is known for. Our dedicated staff treat and care for thousands of patients from across south Wales every single year but the current cancer centre does not have the facilities or space necessary to meet the future needs of our patients and staff. Construction of our new Velindre Cancer Centre is underway, and it's one of the biggest projects Wales has seen in decades. Our nVCC will deliver better outcomes through world-class cancer treatment, enhanced diagnostic capability and greater access to innovation, training and research. Every aspect of the nVCC has been shaped around the needs of patients, staff, families, and carers. From easier navigation and better parking to therapeutic spaces and dedicated family areas, the new building will enhance comfort, dignity and the overall experience of care. It will be one of the most sustainable hospitals in the UK, providing leading cancer care for our patients and a better environment for our dedicated staff. The nVCC is designed to grow and adapt. With standardised, flexible clinical spaces, modern infrastructure, and greener energy use, the nVCC will meet the changing needs of cancer care and deliver long-term value for our patients, staff and the NHS. From design to operation, the nVCC leads the way in sustainable healthcare. It is the first all-electric hospital in the UK, uses renewable energy and has been designed to minimise environmental impact as much as possible while delivering the world-class cancer care Velindre is known for. Its sustainable features support Wales’s broader ambition to be net zero and resilient for future generations. Our dedicated staff are working together with Acorn, the consortium chosen to construct the new cancer centre, to build a facility that will serve future generations for decades to come. Sacyr UK, is the construction company building the cancer centre. Our new home is critical in safeguarding the provision of crucial treatment and care for the 1.5 million people of south Wales and is critical to keep pace with the increasing demand. More than just a new building, we're transforming our care across the system. Alongside our new Velindre Cancer Centre we've also opened the Velindre @ Nevill Hall Radiotherapy Unit. Construction of the new Velindre Cancer Centre is underway and we are scheduled to open in Spring 2027.

“A greenprint for healthcare design” 💚

Our new Velindre Cancer Centre has been featured in a top magazine highlighting all the ways in which it is leading the way in sustainable healthcare.

Scheduled to open in spring 2027, our new home has been featured in Public Sector Building showcasing how the new centre will be a benchmark for future schemes - low carbon, all-electric, and built to support a greener, healthier future for Wales.

Michael Woodford, partner and director of White Arkitekter London, the architects who designed the nVCC, highlighted several of the key features that will make our new centre one of the UK’s most sustainable healthcare buildings:

🌍 Prioritising local sourcing and working with local supply chains wherever possible
♻️ Using natural materials with low carbon footprints where possible
🌳 Embedding natural timber, expansive daylight and views of the surrounding green landscape to provide a calm, accessible, and supportive environment
☀️ Low energy performance through an all-electric design powered by heat pumps and solar panels
🌿 Landscaping that includes wildflowers, an orchard and a community garden
💡 An adaptable, grid-based system to allow rooms to be reconfigured as clinical technology evolves, removing the need for carbon-heavy overhauls of the building
💧 Sustainable drainage to help manage surface water naturally

From design to operation, the nVCC leads the way in sustainable healthcare. From day one it has been designed to minimise environmental impact as much as possible while delivering the world-class cancer care Velindre is known for.

“Cynllun gwyrdd ar gyfer dylunio gofal iechyd”

Mae ein Canolfan Ganser Felindre newydd wedi cael sylw mewn cylchgrawn blaenllaw sy'n tynnu sylw at yr holl ffyrdd y mae'n arwain y ffordd ym maes gofal iechyd cynaliadwy.

Mae ein cartref newydd, sydd i fod i agor yn nhymor y gwanwyn 2027, wedi cael ei gynnwys yn y cylchgrawn Public Sector Building, gan ddangos sut y bydd y ganolfan newydd yn feincnod ar gyfer cynlluniau'r dyfodol - carbon isel, trydan yn unig, ac wedi'i hadeiladu i gefnogi dyfodol gwyrddach ac iachach i Gymru.

Tynnodd Michael Woodford, partner a chyfarwyddwr White Arkitekter London, y penseiri a ddyluniodd y ganolfan newydd, sylw at nifer o'r nodweddion allweddol a fydd yn gwneud ein canolfan newydd yn un o adeiladau gofal iechyd mwyaf cynaliadwy'r DU:

🌍 Blaenoriaethu cyrchu lleol a gweithio gyda chadwyni cyflenwi lleol lle bynnag y bo modd
♻️ Defnyddio deunyddiau naturiol gydag ôl troed carbon isel lle bo modd
🌳 Pren naturiol, llawer o olau dydd a golygfeydd o'r dirwedd werdd o'i chwmpas i ddarparu amgylchedd tawel, hygyrch a chefnogol
☀️ Perfformiad ynni isel trwy ddyluniad hollol drydanol sydd wedi'i bweru gan bympiau gwres a phaneli solar
🌿 Tirlunio sy'n cynnwys blodau gwyllt, perllan a gardd gymunedol
💡 System seiliedig ar grid, y gellir ei addasu, i ganiatáu i ystafelloedd gael eu hailffurfweddu wrth i dechnoleg glinigol ddatblygu ac yn sgil hynny, dileu'r angen am waith adnewyddu mawr sy'n ddwys o ran carbon.
💧 Draenio cynaliadwy i helpu i reoli dŵr arwyneb yn naturiol

Mae'r CGFn wedi bod ar flaen y gad ym maes gofal iechyd cynaliadwy o'r cychwyn cyntaf, a bydd hyn yn parhau tan y bydd y ganolfan yn agor ac yn weithredol. Mae’r ganolfan wedi cael ei dylunio i leihau'r effaith ar yr amgylchedd gymaint â phosibl, a darparu'r gofal canser o safon fyd-eang y mae Felindre yn adnabyddus amdano.

Help shape our new Velindre Cancer Centre multi faith space 💚

As we continue to develop our new Velindre Cancer Centre, we're inviting people to help shape a key wellbeing space.

Our new multi faith space will provide an environment for reflection, prayer, contemplation and quiet time for staff, patients and visitors.

Now, as part of the design process, our nVCC lead artist Laura Thomas is holding a drop-in session to hear feedback on the colour, motifs and patterns to be incorporated in the space.

Join us for "A Conversation About Colour"
Monday October 5
Charity Hub, near the entrance to the Velindre Cancer Centre canteen
10am - 2pm

Drop-in at any time to help select colours that you feel would be appropriate for the multi faith space and to share your thoughts on the options.
Laura is also engaging directly with key members of the team including our chaplaincy team, supportive care colleagues and equality colleagues, to ensure the new multi faith space reflects the diverse needs of our patients, families, staff and communities.
If you have any questions in the meantime or can't make the session, get in touch at [email protected]

At Velindre, we’re doing more than responding to today’s needs. We’re building for the future with our new Velindre Cancer Centre (nVCC). Our new home represents the biggest opportunity to transform cancer care for people across Wales, now and for decades to come.
When our new home opens in spring 2027, it will help more patients receive the right care at the right time and closer to home where possible. We’ll have improved access to clinical trials and expanded clinical capacity to support our patients to live longer, better-quality lives.

Yn Felindre, rydym yn gwneud mwy na dim ond ymateb i anghenion heddiw. Rydym yn adeiladu ar gyfer y dyfodol gyda'n Canolfan Ganser Felindre newydd (CGFn). Mae ein cartref newydd yn cynrychioli'r cyfle mwyaf i drawsnewid gofal canser i bobl ledled Cymru, nawr ac am ddegawdau i ddod.
Pan fydd ein cartref newydd yn agor yng ngwanwyn 2027, bydd yn helpu mwy o gleifion i dderbyn y gofal cywir ar yr amser cywir, ac yn agosach at adref lle bo’n bosib. Bydd gennym fynediad gwell at dreialon clinigol a chapasiti clinigol ehangach i gefnogi ein cleifion i fyw bywydau hirach o ansawdd gwell.

In 2021, Velindre launched its 10 year Cancer Research and Development Ambitions, setting out a vision to become a leader in cancer research both nationally and internationally.

Our goal is to create a culture where every patient, family member and staff member who wishes to engage with research has the opportunity to do so.🤝

Now, in 2026, we have reached the halfway point of that journey, and the impact has been remarkable. Over the last five years, we have:
🔬 Opened 158 new research studies
👥 Recruited and cared for 1,558 patients taking part in research trials
🏆 Become the top recruiter in the UK for 42 clinical trials

Behind these numbers are countless stories of hope, innovation and progress. From pioneering treatments and life-changing clinical trials to improvements in patient care, research is already making a difference to cancer services today while shaping the future of cancer care for generations to come.💚

This is also a landmark year for Velindre. As we celebrate 70 years of the Velindre Cancer Service and prepare to open the new state-of-the-art Velindre Cancer Centre in Spring 2027, research and innovation remain at the heart of everything we do.

Central to this next chapter is the Velindre Collaborative, a physical and virtual space within our new cancer centre that will be a gateway for cancer-focused collaboration, implementation and improvement across Wales. By bringing together expertise from healthcare, academia, government, industry and the third sector, the Collaborative will help translate research, innovation and learning into meaningful and sustainable improvements in cancer care and outcomes.🔬

As we look ahead to the next five years of our strategy, the Velindre Collaborative will help accelerate our research ambitions, strengthen partnerships, and ensure patients have access to the latest advancements in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
