One of Wales’ most heartbreaking legends tells the story of Gelert, the loyal hound of Prince Llywelyn the Great.

Returning home from a hunt, Llywelyn found Gelert covered in blood beside his baby’s overturned cradle. Believing the dog had killed his son, the prince struck Gelert down in grief and rage.

Moments later, he heard his child’s cries. The baby was alive, hidden beneath the cradle, while a dead wolf lay nearby. Gelert had fought to save the child.

Realising his terrible mistake, Llywelyn was overcome with remorse and buried his faithful companion with honour. It is said he never smiled again.

Whether fact or legend, Gelert’s story has become one of the most powerful tales of loyalty and regret in Welsh history.
