On 23rd December our Health and Safety Team successfully executed a Part 2A order against another Scratcher operating from his home in Cardiff. All equipment was seized and will be destroyed.

Another Illegal Scratcher Prosecuted

An unregistered tattooist commonly known as a ‘scratcher’ has been successfully prosecuted by the new Shared Regulatory Service at the City of Cardiff Council. Environmental Health Officers took action against Mr Lee Gronow after receiving reports that he was tattooing people without the required registration and advertising his services on Social Media.

Mr Gronow of Riverside, Cardiff, attended Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on 6th November 2015 and pleaded guilty to carrying on the business of tattooing when he was not registered and operating from premises’ that were not fit for purpose, contrary to Section 15(1)(a) of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982. He was ordered to pay a total £440.

Scratchers like Mr. Gronow present a significantly increased risk of their clients developing serious, and potentially life threatening, infections such as Hepatitis and HIV, as well as serious skin infections which require medical intervention. They are also damaging the trade, and reputation, of legitimate tattooists who work hard to operate within the law.

Mrs Christina Hill, Operational Manager Commercial Services for Shared Regulatory Services said ‘There is a presumption by the public that all businesses offering invasive treatments such as tattooing are regulated, safe to use and pose little risk to health. Unfortunately, as this case illustrates, this is not always the case. Our advice to anyone thinking about having a tattoo would be to only use registered, reputable businesses’.

More evidence that local authorities like those in South Wales are adopting a zero tolerance to illegal tattooists

With great weather forecast for the weekend here are some useful tips for safe BBQs:
1. Always wash your hands thoroughly before preparing food, after touching raw meat and before eating.
2. Raw meats can contain harmful bacteria and should be separated from cooked and ready-to-eat food.
3. Barbecued food may look well-cooked when it isn't. Make sure that burgers, sausages and chicken are properly cooked by cutting into the meat and checking that it is steaming hot all the way through, that none of it is pink and that any juices run clear.

Please remember if you're barbecuing for lots of people, it’s a good idea to cook the meat or poultry in the oven and then finish it off on the barbecue for flavour.

•Written to 77 playgroups 56 day care nurseries (previously visited as part of the infection control project) with a copy of the poster and info
•Emailed info to local networks (Neighbourhood partnership, Childcare settings network group)
•Contacted the “Get Cooking programme” with families in Flying Start
•Provided info to Food Cardiff Newsletter (which is emailed to 201 recipients with a wider reach to 1500 interested parties), the Food Cardiff Website, the Workforce Development site and Cardiff libraries
•And visited a Cardiff playgroup with colleagues in Wales Pre-school Providers Association (see photo)
