Castle Cary Fire Station

The crew from Castle Cary will be taking part in this training exercise tonight.

At 7pm tonight (29 September), some of our crews will be holding a training exercise at Yeovil Hospital, alongside our colleagues from DWFireRescue and Avon Fire & Rescue Service

They will be testing our high-rise firefighting procedures, as well as our response to lithium-ion battery fires.

Synthetic smoke will be used as part of the training and may be visible in the immediate area.

Please do not be concerned if you see a number of appliances and smoke coming from the hospital this evening.

Wow…what a summer🔥

We’ve been reflecting on an extraordinary few months – and the numbers really tell the story.

July alone saw:

📞 6,041 calls to Control
🔥 864 fires attended
🌿 547 fires in the open
🚒 2,008 incidents in total

From 8 July onwards, exceptionally high demand became the norm, with our crews, Control colleagues and wider teams working tirelessly to keep our communities safe.

And you played a part too – by changing plans, taking extra care around outdoor fires and helping share our safety messages.

As we look ahead, it’s important we learn from this summer and continue to play our part in reducing the risk of wildfires. We can all help - and we can do it together.

A crew from Castle Cary have spent the day in the New Forest today to support the ongoing efforts to dampen down and extinguish hot spots from the large fire that started on Sunday. This being shout number 13 in 13 days so far for August.

Another 3 shouts for Castle Cary this weekend.

Yesterday morning two walkers noticed a fallen tree smouldering in a hedge in Batcombe that was starting to spread to hedgerow. Luckily they called 999 and we were able to attend and extinguish the fire before it took hold of all the surrounding dry vegetation.

Yesterday evening a crew took our land rover to a large fire near Bridgwater involving a bin store and mini bus that had spread to surrounding fields and woodland. Crews used scotty packs, beaters, hose reels and all terrain vehicles to surround the fire.

This morning, we were alerted to a single vehicle RTC just outside of Castle Cary. The driver was already out of the vehicle and so the crew made the car and the scene safe before returning to station.

The hot, dry weather has led to a rise in outdoor fires, and we want to hear from you.

July was incredibly busy for firefighters across the country. Devon and Somerset took over 5300 calls making it the busiest month for the service for over 10 years. Our crew at Castle Cary attended 26 incidents, well above average for the station. The majority of this was due to the dry spell, however we still had a range of calls.

21 of these shouts were for our main pumping appliance V74P1, the remaining 5 were calls for our land rover V74M1.

Elsewhere this month, our training has focused on pumping water from various sources, Casualty care and we also visited some of our local risks to familiarise ourselves with layouts, access points and hydrant locations.

As the dry and warm weather remains, we will continue to share advice from the service and other agencies. Stay safe, remain vigilant and call 999 as early as possible in an emergency.

A drought has been declared across Devon and Somerset, and surrounding areas 🚨

Hot, dry conditions mean a higher risk of wildfires and increased pressure on water supplies.

We’re reducing non-essential water use, reviewing firefighting water supplies, and ensuring our wildfire resources – including water bowsers, 4x4s, ATVs and drones – are ready to respond.

Help to protect each other, and our countryside and water supplies, by:

🔥 Avoiding campfires and disposable BBQs
🍖 Staying with BBQs and fire pits
🚬 Never dropping lit ci******es on dry ground
💧 Using water wisely
