Chatteris Museum Focusing on the natural & cultural heritage of Chatteris & the surrounding Fenland villages.

Chatteris Museum is now open in the former Barclays Bank at 2 Park Street, Chatteris PE16 6AE. The museum is entirely volunteer run with the collections owned by The Chatteris Museum Trust, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. The concept of a town museum was conceived in 1942 by Charles Dobb, the Town Clerk for Chatteris Urban District Council, in a small display cabinet in the offices of Grove House, Chatteris. A Museum Society was formed in 1963 to develop the collection and open to the public. In the mid 1990s the museum moved to the former Doctor's Surgery in Church Lane, and to its current location in 2023. The museum has begun a phased re-opening and our displays will develop as we unpack over 12,000 objects. A National Lottery Heritage Fund grant has enabled redevelopment to begin telling the story of Chatteris and its people.

Did you spot us in the first issue of the Discovering Chatteris Magazine?

The article touched on the drainage of the fens…windmills, steam power and why the 16ft, 20ft & 40ft drains were given those names!

Delve a little deeper into these stories and more with photographs, tools, documents and maps currently on display in the museum.

Interesting talk happening this Friday on the Workhouse in Doddington 🗣️

When the workhouse shut down in Chatteris in 1834, people were transferred to the newly built workhouse in Doddington, although it didn't open until 1838. It was called the North Witchford Union Workhouse at the time.

Just a little reminder about our October Talk all about North Witchford Workhouse in Doddington, at St. Peter's Church Hall, March, this Friday at 7.30pm. Everybody is welcome!

John Fisher visited the museum today to kindly donate a range of items from his parents (further post to follow!)

But this wasn’t the first time John had donated to the museum…

🗡️ In 1962, at the age of 13, John was photographed at Cromwell school presenting a Bronze Age sword blade to the museum. It was found during ploughing at Primrose Hill on the Chatteris to Doddington road.

It was a great pleasure to see him holding the sword again after all these years to replicate the photograph!
