👻 A week of history, mystery and things that go bump in the night at Chester Castle!

What a fantastic Halloween week we’ve had! A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Halloween events and ghost tours over the last week. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed welcoming you to the castle and, just as importantly, hearing your feedback, comments and stories about your experiences.

We’ve had a little bit of everything – from fascinating insights into the science behind paranormal investigation to the more traditional oral traditions of ghost sightings, unexplained happenings and spooky tales associated with the castle and its former residents.

We hope you’ve enjoyed discovering the history behind the stories as much as we’ve enjoyed sharing them with you. And, of course, there were one or two unscheduled happenings along the way which perhaps weren’t quite on the tour itinerary! Whether down to the imagination, the atmosphere or something a little harder to explain, they certainly added to the Halloween experience! 👀

The week culminated in last night’s Halloween ghost tour, where visitors had the opportunity to encounter some of our very own resident ghosts! Our wonderful volunteers and staff certainly got into the spirit of things, helping to create a wonderfully atmospheric evening, with plenty of history, mystery and perhaps a few surprises.

We were delighted to see so many visitors embracing both sides of the experience – from the fascinating history of Chester Castle to the folklore, paranormal investigations and spooky stories that make this place so special.

🎙️ And the stories don’t stop there!

This Halloween also saw the release of a special episode of the English Heritage Podcast, The Haunting and History of Chester Castle. Hosted by Amy Matthews, alongside English Heritage Curator Will Wyeth, and our own site engagement manager Gary Ashby , it explores the castle’s fascinating history, intriguing accounts of paranormal activity and its enduring ghost stories.

If you haven’t listened yet, why not give it a go?

Finally, a massive thank you to all our visitors for joining us, sharing your experiences and making the week such a success. And a very special thank you to our fantastic volunteers and staff, whose enthusiasm, creativity and hard work brought everything to life.

We hope you’ve enjoyed your visit and perhaps taken away a little more history, a few new stories and maybe one or two questions that remain unexplained!

Until next time… keep an eye out. You never quite know who – or what – you might encounter at Chester Castle! 👻

👻 You’ve seen the stories... you’ve seen the pictures... now hear the latest! 👻

Chester Castle has been chosen to be front and centre for the English Heritage Halloween hauntings! In this special English Heritage Halloween Podcast, Engagement Manager Gary and Castle Historian Will Wyeth explain the finer points of hauntings, sightings versus the actual historical narrative – and you might just be surprised. From the cells to the medieval voices on the stairwell, to shadow figures, fact and folklore collide...Give it a listen if you dare: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/inspire-me/podcast/

Every object has a story to tell. But how can one mystery item lead us on a journey through history, people and places? In the English Heritage podcast, comedian and writer Amy Matthews brings you entertaining tales from unexpected places. Each week, we begin with a mystery item and with the help of...

ON THIS DAY: 15 OCTOBER 1656 — 3PM
370 YEARS AGO TODAY.
On this exact afternoon, just outside the walls of Chester Castle, three women were executed.
Their names were Ellen Beech, Anne Osboston and Anne Thornton.
Detained, tried here at the Castle, and hanged just beyond its gates. Afterwards they were buried somewhere outside the churchyard of St Mary's, beside the Castle itself.
This is one of the darkest, most powerful chapters in Chester's local history — and one that is seeing renewed interest as their stories are finally being heard again.
We know details of the accusations against at least two of them. As was so common then, it started with the everyday turning sinister — unexplained illness, a sudden death, neighbour disputes, long-held suspicions whispered about behind doors.
And why women? In periods of witchcraft persecution, it was often women who lived on the margins — healers, midwives, widows, those who were outspoken or simply alone — who became the easiest targets for fear to fix upon.
Their story still lingers within these walls.
If you want to walk where they walked and hear where history turns haunted, join us at the end of this month.

We'll look at the very different ways investigations are carried out, share the latest findings from recent hotspots, and separate the spooky tales from the serious work.
The evening will conclude with a walk-around mini investigation of some of the castle's most active hotspots, using real investigation equipment to see if we can detect any ghostly activity ourselves 🕯️📡
