An individual's connection to a nation has many aspects: ancestral, ethnic, cultural, and legal. Across the world, those who qualify on all four are recognised as feeling a unique and irreplaceable sense of belonging and attachment to their land.
Extremist mass immigration policy over the last 30 years has violated this natural feeling. As a result, we must now contend with a rising tide of anxiety and insecurity, including growing civil unrest as ancestrally English people are projected to become a minority in England by 2050. This insecurity is aggravated by the present Equality Act (2010), which licenses discrimination against them.
Rishi Sunak, in his weekend article for The Times, argued that Englishness should not "become a DNA test". This unhelpfully elides many aspects of cultural and ancestral identity. The United Kingdom is itself a union of nations, and people from different backgrounds can, and do, share a common culture here. Those who live here legally and embrace British culture are our compatriots and part of our national community. The SDP is an assimilationist party, not an ethnonationalist one.
However, preventing the native peoples of Britain from becoming a minority in their own homeland is a legitimate and responsible aim of policy. The SDP's immigration policy will protect our borders and end mass immigration. It will substantially reverse the post-pandemic immigration wave, debar immigration from "red list" countries which show a high level of crime or economic dependency, and detain offshore all illegal entrants prior to repatriation.
SDP Interim Party Leader, Ross Baglin, said:
"On present trends, ancestrally English people will become a minority in England within a few decades. This change had no democratic mandate, and it has greatly changed our way of life, very often for the worse. The SDP believes that immigration can be beneficial if it is tightly controlled and if immigrants assimilate to the British way of life.
"If you bring your primary loyalty and duty to this country and see it as core to your personal identity, you can be part of us, a valued and integral part of our rich British national story.
"However, it is in the interests of everyone, whatever their background, to control our borders and manage immigration levels and quality tightly. That is what the SDP's immigration policy proudly does.
"It is time the fantasies of our irresponsible political class were brought to an end."
