Predominantly our area of responsibility is obviously Cleethorpes coastline. However, we can and do get tasked to incidents further afield. Each Coastguard team has a flank team who respond as a support team when required. Our flank teams for technical rescue incidents are Donna Nook and Hull CRT's.

To ensure we can respond quickly and effectively outside of our immediate area. We often carry out local knowledge patrols to check access points onto bank tops and other hard to get to locations within our wider area of responsibility.

Sunday saw us driving to the Humber Bridge and making our way back towards Cleethorpes along the bank top. Ensuring all known access points and gates are still accessible. We drove from the bridge to New Holland before returning to our station.

⚠️DON'T DAMAGE SAFETY EQUIPMENT ⚠️

It is beyond belief that people think it's a laugh to damage or remove SAFETY EQUIPMENT!

These throw lines have been strategically placed to help save lives. Cleethorpes Resort Safety team far too often find these safety features either missing or damaged!

Think before you decide to damage or steal a throw line. What if it was one of your family members or a friend who was in difficulty in the water, and the throw line was missing.

Could you live with that thought if they drowned, knowing it was your fault!

Incident number 142/26 - Mud Rescue

Whilst en route to the incident, the team was initially tasked with a report of a male stuck in the mud. The tasking was subsequently updated to an 11-year-old boy and his mother stuck in the mud.

On arrival, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) crews were already on scene and making their way towards the casualty. Due to confusion regarding the casualty’s exact location, we were required to relocate and access the scene via the Humber Mouth Yacht Club beach access point.

Following discussions between our Officer in Charge (OIC) and the HFRS Watch Manager, it was agreed that HFRS would continue with the extraction of the casualty, while our team established and deployed the winch recovery system to bring the rescuers and casualty safely back to shore.

The boy was successfully recovered and handed over to East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) for assessment. He was checked for injuries and, having sustained no apparent injuries, was left in the care of his guardian.

The team then returned to the station and cleaned down all equipment used during the incident, ensuring it was ready for future taskings.

Incident number 134/26

On arrival, the First Informant (FIF) identified a fluorescent object approximately 3 metres from the rock groyne, which appeared to be a swimmer’s tow float. The float appeared to be held in position by the wind/tide or possibly weighted down.

Consideration was given to requesting the Cleethorpes ILB. However, the float subsequently drifted into the rocks, allowing a CRO in WSAR PPE/PPC to safely recover the item.

The item was confirmed as a swimmer’s tow float. It contained no identifying information or contact details and had a hole along the seam.

CCTV was reviewed at the Beach Safety Resort office. A swimmer was observed swimming towards the rock groyne from the direction of the pier at 08:29 hrs. At 08:49 hrs, the swimmer turned and headed back towards the pier. The tow float was subsequently observed drifting towards the groyne.

Due to CCTV coverage, it could not be confirmed that the swimmer had exited the water safely. A search of the beach was conducted for any clothing or personal belongings that could identify the swimmer; the search was negative.

The swimmer appeared to be a strong swimmer and was not observed to be in difficulty or distress.

Following discussion with Humber, it was agreed that a thorough search had been completed and, based on the available information, it was considered likely that the swimmer had safely exited the water.

If this was you swimming near the rock groyne, please get in touch with Humber Coastguard to confirm that you are safe and well.

If you are an open water swimmer, and use a swimmers tow float, and lose it, please contact Humber Coastguard to advise them of the situation, providing them with the colour of the float, and the location where it came adrift.

Incident number 125/26

Team paged to assist RNLI Cleethorpes with berthing a broken down sailing vessel. The skipper had got into difficulty near the mouth of the River Humber, and was taken into tow by Cleethorpes Lifeboat crew near the mono bouy, taking over the tow from RNLI Mablethorpe.

A welfare check was carried out on the skipper, who was very tired after not sleeping for 36 hours. He is a very experienced sailor, and had all of the recommended navigational and safety aids on board his vessel.

July turned out to be a busy month for Cleethorpes Coastguard.

During the course of the month our team were called out to incidents 15 times. These callouts included multiple calls to persons being cut-off by the tide, medical incidents and calls to lost or missing children.

We have also had 7 training sessions including some with our neighbouring teams of Donna Nook and Hull, these include regular training sessions to keep our knowledge and skills up-to-date and exercises to put our knowledge into practice and make sure we are ready for situations that might not come up very often but are important for us to be ready for, such as a recent training exercise where the team evacuated an injured casualty from a moored vessel.

July also proved to be busy for our team trying to spread knowledge and awareness of water safety and coastal safety with our volunteers attending several schools and other groups or events in the area, talking to various age groups from young children through to adults about being safe around our coastline and inland bodies of water.

So far this year there have been a spate of incidents throughout the country where members of the public have tragically lost their lives in the water. We want people to enjoy the water but ask that you do so safely, with a few tips to help.

Always check the tides times. In Cleethorpes and Humberston clear the sandbanks 5 hours before high-tide to avoid being cut-off.
Always wear a life jacket. It could save your life.
If you go out on the water, carry a form of communication (VHF radio or phone) in water proof pouch, also let somebody know what time you plan to return so they can call for assistance if you are late back.
Be careful jumping into bodies of water, there could be hidden objects under the surface, or cold water shock could set in which can be incredibly serious.

Remember - Float-to-live
If you find yourself in trouble around the coast - Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

HEATWAVE - WATER SAFETY ADVICE

In the UK, water safety organisations have already reported 19 fatalities in water-related incidents this year (15 of which were children) as warmer weather draws more people to the coast, rivers, lakes, quarries, and reservoirs.

The reports from France are a stark reminder that extreme heat and water can be a deadly combination.

French authorities have confirmed that 40 people have drowned since the heatwave began, with many of the deaths occurring as people sought relief from record-breaking temperatures by swimming in rivers, lakes, and other unsupervised locations. Most of the victims were reported to be young people.

Heatwave Water Safety Advice:

Never enter water to cool off suddenly. Cold water shock can cause involuntary gasping, rapid breathing, and loss of control, even on hot days.

Avoid swimming alone. Go with others and let someone know where you are.

Use lifeguarded beaches and supervised swimming areas whenever possible.

Stay away from reservoirs, quarries, and fast-flowing rivers. Hidden currents, steep sides, and cold temperatures make them particularly dangerous.

Do not enter the water after drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
Wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid when boating, paddleboarding or participating in water sports.

Keep children under constant supervision near any body of water.

If someone gets into difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard (at the coast) or emergency services inland.

Avoid entering the water yourself unless trained to do so.

If You Fall Into Cold Water

Remember the "Float to Live" advice promoted by the UK's Royal National Lifeboat Institution:

Tilt your head back with your ears submerged.
Relax and try to control your breathing.
Move your hands gently to stay afloat.
Once breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety if possible.

As temperatures remain high across the UK, authorities are urging people to enjoy the water safely and to treat natural bodies of water with caution, regardless of how warm the weather feels.
