The need to defend against drone attacks on the modern battlefield has seen 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment stepping up the Airborne Battlegroup’s ability to not only seek and destroy enemy positions but to ensure they are able to defend against incoming threats.

Ex GREEN MAELSTROM saw paratroopers from 3 PARA honing skills during an intensive live-fire counter-UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) training cadre; part of which saw them deploy into defensive positions where they were able to identify and jam threats at range but were also required to use sh****ns to deal with any close-in targets.

The top spots at the 2026 PARAS'10 race were dominated by Gurkhas as they claimed wins in both the TAB and RUN events, staying ahead of a field of more than 600 athletes around a gruelling course in Catterick.

The PARAS'10 is a testing 10-mile endurance race based on the 10-miler from The Parachute Regiment’s P Company test week, with competitors choosing to either tackle the TAB event, where they run the course over undulating military land in boots and carrying a 35lb pack, or the RUN event, which covers the same course but without a pack and can be done in running shoes.

It was another hugely successful race around a hilly off-road circuit in North Yorkshire, with Milan Rai claiming top spot in the male TAB event in a time of one hour 20 minutes 45 seconds, while Roshan Thapa dipped under the hour-mark to take victory in the RUN event in 58m 3s.

Catherine Allen topped the board for Senior Ladies in the TAB and winning the RUN event for females was Beth Eyles.

Widdup Hayes ran 1h 40m 51s in the TAB event to claim the Alex Fairey Trophy, which is awarded to the top under-19 runner at the Catterick event and honours Captain Alex Fairey, who served in the Parachute Regiment until his death in a motorcycle accident in 1997.

The PARAS'10 raises important funds for SUPPORT OUR PARAS and is managed by Support Our Paras with support from P Coy.

SUPPORT OUR PARAS is the ‘reserve parachute’ for British Airborne Forces past, present and future. It is the only charity which exists solely to support The Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces, looking after veterans, serving soldiers and families within our Airborne community.

Today is Saint Michael’s day in France - a day that is special to Airborne Warriors as St Michael is the patron saint of paratroopers.

The tradition began during World War II, when a British chaplain gave medals representing Saint Michael to paratroopers before they jumped into France to join units of the French Resistance.

Having Saint Michael as an Airborne protector made perfect sense, as, in the Book of Revelation – in the Apocalypse of St John – the Archangel Michael is the heavenly military commander who descends from the sky leading God's angelic army to defeat Satan and his fallen angels.

The idea of having St Michael as protector was further reinforced after World War II by father Jego, chaplain of the 3rd Battalion of the French 1st Parachute Chasseur Regiment, as he ended a famous sermon with a line that became Airborne folklore by saying:

“Et par Saint Michel, vive les parachutists!”

So, on this special day, we send greetings to our Airborne comrades in 82nd Airborne Division, 11th Airborne Division, and 173rd Airborne Brigade 🇺🇸; 11ebrigadeparchutiste 🇫🇷; @11 LuchtmobieleBrigade 🇳🇱; 6 Brygada Powietrznodesantowa im. gen. bryg. Stanisława Sosabowskiego🇵🇱; 陸上自衛隊 第1空挺団 1st Airborne Brigade🇯🇵; Brigada "Almogávares" VI de Paracaidistas🇪🇸; Luftlandebrigade 1🇩🇪; Brigata Paracadutisti "Folgore"🇮🇹; and all other paratroopers in NATO and our wider allies.

The funds raised by the team will help provide vital assistance, including mental health support, mobility adaptations, hardship relief, employment and training opportunities, support for wounded soldiers, adventure training, compassionate travel assistance, memorial projects and much more.

82nd anniversary Op MARKET GARDEN, Arnhem – Service of Remembrance, CWGC Oosterbeek 20th September 2026

Honouring Geoff Roberts MBE, one of the few surviving members of the British Airborne forces who fought in and around Arnhem in September 1944.

Having recently celebrated his 101st birthday, Geoff was the only surviving veteran able to attend this year’s commemorative services in Holland and was determined to travel once again to honour fallen comrades and remember those he fought alongside in the pursuit of liberty 82 years ago.

Like all those Airborne heroes, the story of Geoff’s bravery is extraordinary.

Having joined the army in 1942 and trained in Scotland, Geoff was posted to the 7th Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers, who were assigned to the 1st Airborne Division.

After glider training and being briefed for several operations that were cancelled, he took part in Operation Market Garden in September 1944, coming under fire as his glider approached over the Dutch coast and then seeing intense action at the Ginkel Heath DZ as his unit were tasked with holding the landing strip for further troops entering the battle.

Geoff was also involved with digging trenches at the White House, a central point in the defence of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers that came under sustained and accurate German mortar attacks, and evacuating wounded under the threat of sniper fire.

He was one of the last to leave as part of the retreat to Oosterbeek but was captured and sent to POW camp Stalag IV-C where he worked in coal mines until the end of the war.

82nd anniversary Op MARKET GARDEN, Arnhem – Colonel Commandant of The Parachute Regiment laid a wreath at the Service of Remembrance held at CWGC Oosterbeek.

Major General Ollie Kingsbury OBE was joined by Brigadier Ed Cartwright, whose wreath was on behalf of 16 Air Assault Brigade, while Col Piotr Bieniek, Commander of the Polish 6th Airborne Brigade, laid a wreath on behalf of Polish forces.

His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Chris Rampling CMG MBE, also laid a wreath on behalf of the UK Government.

Geoff Roberts MBE, one of the few surviving members of the British Airborne forces who fought in and around Arnhem in September 1944, received warm applause from the congregation as he paid tribute to fallen comrades by laying his own wreath at the memorial cross. Having recently celebrated his 101st birthday, Geoff was the only surviving veteran able to attend this year’s commemorative services in Holland.

The service then concluded with the traditional laying of flowers at the graves of the fallen by local Dutch schoolchildren as the process of remembrance continues to be passed on to new generations.

Attendance at commemorative events in the Netherlands by senior officers of The Parachute Regiment, staff from RHQ PARA and the Parachute Regimental Association has been made possible thanks to funding from SUPPORT OUR PARAS.

82nd anniversary Op MARKET GARDEN, Arnhem – Service of Remembrance, Ginkel Heath, 19th September 2026

One of the key commemorative events across the weekend of Remembrance of the 82nd anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem took place at the spot where thousands of allied Airborne soldiers landed from the sky in September 1944.

Ginkel Heath – Drop Zone Y – provided the backdrop to a poignant service that included the laying of a wreath on behalf of British forces by the Colonel Commandant of The Parachute Regiment.

Major General Ollie Kingsbury also delivered an address to the hundreds of people in attendance, with Chaplain to 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, Reverend Stuart Hull CF, also speaking about the continuing significance of remembering the bravery and sacrifice of Airborne Forces more than 80 years ago.

Attendance at commemorative events in Holland by senior officers of The Parachute Regiment, staff from RHQ PARA and the Parachute Regimental Association has been made possible thanks to funding from SUPPORT OUR PARAS.

Music at the commemorative event was provided by the massed band of Pegasus Pipes and Drums, with Pipe Major Vincent de Feiter leading a moving rendition of Flowers of the Forest.
