Into the West - Rail Campaign Into The West is the rail campaign for counties Derry, Donegal, Tyrone & Fermanagh.

We work with councils, elected reps, government departments, and community & business groups to make the case for better rail in the western half of the province of Ulster The railway line between Derry and Coleraine is one of the most beautiful in the world. In the past it was allowed to deteriorate and was threatened with closure. 'Into the West Rail Lobby' has been campaigning since 2004 for the upgrading of Derry’s train services. The campaign has the support of a range of individuals, trades unions, business people and organisations, NGO’s, political parties, etc.

With a campaign now launched for to become a city, we've highlighted that the town currently lacks some of the key ingredients you expect to find in a city 👇

LETTERKENNY will not become a “proper city” unless it has a “multi-modal transport hub” with both rail and bus connections.

Trains running on the Limerick-Foynes Freight Line for the first time in 25 years

THE JOURNAL, 29 Oct 2026 – David MacRedmond

TRAINS HAVE BEGUN running on the Limerick to Foynes Freight Line for the first time since the railway was decommissioned 25 years ago, and the public has been warned to expect more in the coming weeks.
Live testing along the route began last weekend, when Irish Rail successfully ran a two-car passenger train to test the track’s signalling and level crossings.
Irish Rail said the test had been a success despite difficult weather conditions brought about by Storm Austen.
It was the first time a train had run along the 42km line between Limerick city and the port of Foynes since it was decommissioned in 2001. The railway first opened in 1858 and originally carried passengers until that service ended in 1963.
Irish Rail urged the public to be aware that test trains are now running regularly along the line and will continue to do so over the coming weeks.
The rail company advised all level crossing users, pedestrians and drivers to “always expect a train, never assume the way is clear and obey level crossing safety signals”.
The €151.5 million upgrade project took four years to complete.
The works included a full refurbishment of the Foynes Station building and train shed, the installation of signalling infrastructure and the reinstatement of 13 level crossings.
The project is part of a wider effort to “position rail at the centre of Ireland’s freight transport system”, Irish Rail said, with the intention to give businesses more opportunities “to switch from road freight to more sustainable rail freight”.
“Reopening of the line, working with Shannon Foynes Port Company, will deliver a reliable, frequent, and sustainable logistics option for many companies that currently or in the future will use the port of Foynes,” the company said.

"When the Candystripe Express pulls out of Derry’s Waterside station on Sunday-week it will be the first train between the north-west and Dublin in the last two years. It will also offer a brief glimpse of the kind of infrastructure future which we all long to see. "What awaits our region in the years ahead is the prize of a direct rail link to the island’s two main cities and its main economic and tourism hubs."

The special 'Candystripe Express' train direct to Dublin from for the 2026 FAI Cup Final gives us all a taste of the kind of improved rail connectivity that should be standard West of the Bann and across the north-west of the island. Better days lie ahead for rail across this region 👍 Derry City Football Club

"We knew demand for this would be huge, and yet again the City supporters showed up in numbers – with the train selling out in less than an hour. I have no doubt we could have filled 2 or 3 trains for this fixture, such are the numbers flocking to the game and the interest in doing so by train.”

This shows why we need better transport connectivity right across the north-west of the island.

It's about lots of things beyond just getting from A to B. It's also about social justice. And ensuring that those without access to a vehicle are better enabled to access jobs, study, training, health & a full social life.

Your opportunities in life should not depend upon your ability to drive or access a motor vehicle.

"In urban areas such as parts of Belfast and Derry/Londonderry, communities with lower levels of car ownership can experience some of the worst impacts from traffic congestion, such as poor air quality. This means those who contribute least to the problem can feel the impacts the most."
