Misterton Resilience Team has been working on this for a couple of years. We've written an emergency plan, and we're now trying to make the Village Hall our safe space with a generator access point and future development of solar panels and fresh water storage.
What you can do at home?
While we upgrade the village infrastructure, emergency preparedness starts at home. Think of it less like "doom mongering" and more like our grandparents’ generation, who always kept a larder stocked with tins and dried beans!
Official guidelines suggest keeping a 2-week supply of food and water, alongside an emergency grab bag. Here are the essentials to get together:
đź’§ Bottled water (sealed for safe drinking)
🍏 Non-perishable food (energy bars, snacks, no-cook options)
🩹 First-aid kit (bandages, wipes, pain relief)
đź’Š Prescription medicine - a small backup supply (+ paper prescription copy)
🔦 Torch & batteries (waterproof or wind-up)
đź“» Emergency radio (battery or hand-crank for updates)
🔋 Phone charger (fully charged power bank and cables)
đź“„ Important documents (IDs, insurance papers in a waterproof pouch)
đź’¶ Cash (small bills in case card readers fail)
Let's look out for ourselves and each other. Have you started your bag yet? This doesn’t mean we’ll all start wearing camouflage, digging underground shelters and calling each other "preppers". It’s just some sensible precautions for whatever unknown lies ahead.
The defence secretary warned the public and businesses needed to think about how they would cope with natural disasters and cyber attacks.
