What can synchrotron science reveal about a 2,000-year-old artefact?🔬

Curators from the Ashmolean Museum used Diamond's I18 microfocus beamline to uncover new details about a bronze terret, a small fitting used to guide the reins of horse-drawn chariots during the Iron Age.

Using experimental data, the team created an elemental map showing the different materials used to make the terret. They discovered that the blue glass used in the inlays originated in Egypt, revealing fascinating links between local craftsmanship and long-distance trade connections.

Did you catch a glimpse of the solar eclipse yesterday?☀️🌑

A group of Diamond staff did at the Science and Technology Facilities Council's dazzling Solar Eclipse Stargazing event! Alongside safely watching the eclipse, the team got crafty with the members of the public, making synchrotron friendship bracelets and beamline boxes!

Last week Diamond welcomed 55 students from all over the country for our 2026 Work Experience Week!💼✨

The students worked on 21 projects across all areas of the facility, getting stuck into their tasks and learning key skills to take into their future careers.

We would like to thank the fantastic staff volunteers who supervised students, the Public Engagement team who coordinated the week and all of the students for their hard work and dedication!🙌

There's still time to apply to our Measurement Science Apprentice position at Diamond! This role offers the opportunity to take part in multiple scientific projects and work with scientists, engineers and technicians to develop a range of precision measurement ( ) skills.

Measurement specialists will provide expert guidance in the Precision Metrology Laboratory, with training to use computer controlled, scientific instruments to perform accurate length and angle measurements.
