🏛️ Last chance to visit the Roman Painted House before it closes for winter!

We're open every day until Saturday, 31 October, from 10am to 4pm, after which the Roman Painted House will close for the season and won't reopen until spring.

Make the most of your final opportunity this year to explore one of Dover's most fascinating historic attractions.

Heritage Open Days starts today! It’s a fantastic opportunity to discover the stories, people and places that have shaped our district through the centuries – all for FREE!

Here at the Roman Painted House, we'll be be opening daily from 11 to 20 September, 10am to 4pm.

Come and see its unique Roman wall paintings and underfloor heating system, offering a rare glimpse into life in Dover nearly 2,000 years ago.

We're pleased to be taking part in Heritage Open Days and Dover Heritage Open Days 2026 once more this year. We will be open daily (11 to 20 September) from 10am to 4pm.

Residents and visitors are being invited to explore the district’s most treasured historic attractions for free from 11 to 20 September - as part of Heritage Open Days - England’s largest annual festival of history and culture.

Dover District Council's three heritage venues, the Maison Dieu Dover (Dover Town Hall), Dover Museum & Bronze Age Boat Gallery and the The Roman Painted House Dover will be taking part, offering free admission alongside a programme of special events, talks, tours and family activities.

🏛️ Roman Painted House - Opening Hours (free entry).

We've welcomed nearly 4,000 visitors since April this year! It's been wonderful to meet both local residents and visitors who've travelled from further afield to discover Dover's Roman Painted House.

⚓ Port of Call Visits - with many port of call dates coming up, we'll be open Thursday to Monday, 10am to 4pm, every week until Monday 7 September.

🏺 Heritage Open Days - we're open daily from 11 to 20 September as part of Heritage Open Days.

📅 Additional Opening Dates: 24, 27 and 28 September and 1, 2, 14 and 16 October

🍂 October Half Term We'll be open daily from 24 to 31 October during the half-term holiday.

We will then close for the season and reopen in 2027.

We look forward to welcoming you before the end of the year!

REPLE! Fill it up again! With the warmer weather upon us we wanted to raise this celebratory motto beaker on display at the Roman Painted House.

Motto beakers had cheery Latin exhortations painted in white and were used for social gatherings. The surviving decoration on this example has the letters R, E, and what appears to be the top part of a P which could be part of the exhortation REPLE ‘Fill it up again’.

The form is a called black slipped ware which reflects how the terracotta beaker is decorated by dipping the clay vessel into a black coloured slip, a thin solution of clay suspended in water, before firing it. The beaker is thought to be from the Moselle Valley near Trier 180AD-250AD.
