🌿 Fridaythorpe Dew Pond – Restoration Update! 🌿
Stage one of the pond restoration is complete! 🎉
The old liner has been removed, and we’ve discovered that the natural clay lining underneath is still intact, which is fantastic news! The pond has been cleared and deepened, creating a much larger area for open water and wildlife.
The excavated material has been used to create new banks around the pond, which will eventually be planted with native wetland plants.
It is, admittedly, looking rather muddy at the moment! 😂 However, we’re planning to have biodegradable coconut fibre matting laid over the new slopes next week. This will help protect the banks from erosion over winter while the ground settles, ahead of planting in spring… and make it look less like the Somme in the meantime.
We’re now looking forward to seeing how the pond refills naturally with rainfall over the coming months.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Please keep children and dogs away from the pond and do not go beyond the safety fencing. The freshly excavated ground is extremely soft and unstable, even where it appears solid, and could be dangerous.
The ducks, meanwhile, have been entirely unbothered by the whole operation. They’ve not to date offered a contribution towards the costs, but appear pleased with their newly refurbished accommodation. 🦆
Thank you to everyone for your patience while the work takes shape. It might look a little dramatic at the moment, but this is just the beginning! We’re excited to see the pond develop into a beautiful wildlife habitat over the coming months. 🌱🐸
