Practical Caregiving Scenario: The Resident Refuses Personal Care

You are assisting an older adult with dementia in a long-term care facility. It is time for their morning bath, but the resident becomes upset and says, “Get away from me! I don’t want you touching me!”

What should you do?

How should a caregiver respond?

1. Stay calm. Do not argue, raise your voice, or force the resident to cooperate.

2.Respect their dignity. Stop what you are doing and give them personal space.

3. Acknowledge their feelings. Say, “I can see that you’re upset. It’s okay. We don’t have to do this right now.”

4. Find the reason. The resident may feel cold, embarrassed, frightened, uncomfortable, or confused.

5. Offer choices. Ask, “Would you prefer to wash your face first, or would you like to try again a little later?”

6. Try again later. If the resident remains distressed, step away safely and report the refusal to the appropriate nurse according to facility policy.

Remember: Personal care is not just about completing a task. It is about protecting a person’s dignity, safety, comfort and right to make choices.

If the resident’s behaviour is sudden or unusual, report it promptly because pain, illness, or other changes may be contributing.

Now, Let’s discuss!

If you were the caregiver, what would you say or do if the resident continued refusing care even after you offered choices?

Share your knowledge and experience. Your insights may help another caregiver handle a similar situation.

💙 What Matters to You? – A Thursday morning to remember! 💙

We feel incredibly lucky as a service to have welcomed Tommy Whitelaw, National Lead Person Centred Voices, who took the time to visit our staff today and deliver a truly meaningful What Matters to You? workshop.

The workshop focused on the importance of meaningful conversations, centred around listening, understanding and kindness, reminding us all how much it matters to take the time to really hear one another.

Drawing on his own personal experience of caring for his mum, Joan, who lived with dementia, Tommy shared powerful reflections and moving stories that encouraged us to think about how we can better support not only the people we care for, but also each other as colleagues. 💙

There was a real mix of emotions throughout the morning, from tears and heartfelt moments to clapping, singing and even dancing! 🥹👏🎶💃 Definitely not your usual Thursday morning!

A huge thank you to Tommy for sharing his experiences so openly, inspiring our staff and reminding us why the little things – a conversation, a moment of kindness, or simply taking the time to listen – can make such a big difference.

We left feeling uplifted, reflective and reminded of what really matters. 💙
