A prolific shoplifter has been banned from entering every Sainsbury's store in County Durham, excluded from entering the Gilesgate area, and handed a 46-week prison sentence.

Louise Walker appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court earlier this week charged with multiple counts of shoplifting.

The 45-year-old pleaded guilty to the offences, and imprisonment was deemed the only suitable option. The court also granted a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), banning Walker from every Sainsbury's store in County Durham and prohibiting her from entering the Gilesgate area of Durham.

Sergeant Arneil, from the Sherburn Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "My team has worked tirelessly to repeatedly put Walker before the courts, and we are pleased to see she is finally being put behind bars. We hope this gives some respite to our local businesses.

"We want to reassure businesses that shoplifting is dealt with robustly and will not be tolerated within our communities."

Not quite the fairytale escape this rider had planned...

On 25 February 2026, our motorcycle officers spotted two electric motorcycles being ridden dangerously in Spennymoor, ignoring red lights and riding across pavements.

A pursuit was authorised, but within seconds one of the bikes collided with a car. The rider ditched the bike, lost a shoe, and made off on foot.

The rider was identified as Taylor Sample by colleagues from the local Neighbourhood Policing Team, and a sample of DNA recovered from the abandoned shoe confirmed he was the rider who fled the scene.

Riding illegal, uninsured vehicles in a dangerous manner poses a serious risk to our communities. We will continue to use all available resources to identify those responsible and put them before the courts.

Taylor didn't make it to the ball, but he did make it to court.

Last month, the 23-year-old from Spennymoor pleaded guilty to all offences, including driving without insurance, failing to stop, and leaving the scene of a collision.

He was handed a one-year prison sentence, suspended for two years, disqualified from driving for 12 months, and must pass an extended driving test.

Two people have been arrested after a suspected stolen car was involved in a collision during a police pursuit on the A1(M) at Chester-le-Street.

We had received several reports of members of the public being threatened by the occupants of a suspected stolen car in Chester-le-Street this afternoon (Thursday, October 15).

Immediate enquiries identified and located a car believed to be involved.

The driver of the car failed to stop for officers and headed in the direction of junction 63 of the A1(M).

A short pursuit then followed but moments after joining the motorway officers made tactical contact with the car to bring it to a halt to ensure the safety of other motorists.

A man in his 50s and a woman in her 40s were arrested at the scene. Both have been taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

The road was closed northbound between junction 63 at Chester-le-Street and junction 64 at Washington while emergency services attend the scene, but two lanes and the slip road have since reopened.

Driving under the influence kills. Don’t risk it.

That’s always our message to drivers, but officers keep finding people who choose to put themselves and the public at risk.

One such example is this woman who was arrested in July.

She blew 114 at the roadside, more than three times the legal limit and was charged with failing to provide and driving without insurance.

She was then further charged with failing to surrender to court bail when she didn't turn up to court.

After being arrested again and put back before the court yesterday, she was subsequently banned from driving for 30 months and ordered to pay a total of £365.

It's just not worth it.

A man who started a fire at a leisure complex has been jailed.

Raymond Coglan was captured on CCTV footage starting a fire in the underground bin area of the DL1 complex in Darlington on the evening of Friday, September 11.

Within minutes, smoke had engulfed the centre’s car park, forcing several businesses to evacuate, including Vue cinema and the Premier Inn hotel.

Firefighters were called to the scene to extinguish the blaze.
Thankfully nobody sustained any injuries as a result of the incident.

Coglan left the area after starting the fire, but returned to the scene of the crime later that evening, where he was arrested by officers and taken into police custody.

The 42-year-old, of no fixed abode, was interviewed and charged with arson with recklessness as to whether life was engendered.

He pleaded guilty to the offence at Teesside Crown Court on Monday (October 12) and was jailed for three years and eight months.

Inspector David Littlefair, from Darlington Neighbourhood Police Team, said: “Coglan’s actions that evening were utterly reckless and posed a significant risk to the public.

“It was a Friday and the complex was busy with people enjoying their evening. Thankfully, nobody was injured during the incident, but this could have easily ended in tragedy.

“In police custody, Coglan showed absolutely no remorse for what he had done and refused to answer any questions.

“I hope he uses his time in prison to reflect on his actions, and the damage he could have caused.”

🛞 A few simple checks could save lives.

Every year, people lose their lives on the roads of County Durham and Darlington.

Defective tyres can lose their grip on the road, causing a driver to lose control of their vehicle.

October is Tyre Safety Month, and our officers will be carrying out checks across the force area.

Over the weekend, officers stopped and checked 262 vehicles, resulting in 21 warnings and five traffic offence reports.

Earlier today, a further 35 vehicles were stopped in Bishop Auckland, where two defective tyres were found.

Thank you to everyone who has stopped for our checks. If you are thinking about driving with defective tyres, please think again.

‼️ Remember to ACT: check your tyre air pressure, condition and tread.

When did you last check yours?
