⚖A thief who repeatedly targeted businesses across County Durham has been jailed.

Georgia Little stole hundreds of pounds worth of goods from shops across Ferryhill, Spennymoor, Willington, Chilton, Newton Aycliffe, and Gilesgate over recent months.

The 28-year-old was arrested by officers from Ferryhill Neighbourhood Team and charged with 19 offences of theft, assault by beating and breaking bail conditions.

Little, of no fixed abode, was put before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on Monday (October 19) where she pleaded guilty to all offences.

She was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison and ordered to pay the victim she assaulted £100 in compensation.

🗣️Sergeant Alisha Meldrum, of Ferryhill Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “As the new neighbourhood policing sergeant, I am very proud and impressed with the hard work conducted by the team securing the arrest, charge and remand of one of our most prolific shoplifters, Little.

“I hope the custodial sentence imposed offers some respite for local business that have suffered significant financial loss because of her offending.

“We will continue relentlessly perusing these individuals causing a negative impact on our communities.”

Did you know Durham City has a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in place?

The PSPO helps tackle behaviours that have a negative impact on our communities and prohibits:

• Possessing open alcohol in a public place
• Urinating or defecating in public
• Begging
• Using intoxicating substances

🤝 Working in partnership with Durham County Council Neighbourhood Wardens, we have taken positive action since July, resulting in:

• 21 arrests for PSPO-related offences
• 9 Fixed Penalty Notices issued

We recently received a number of reports of a male going door-to-door and approaching members of the public, particularly students who were new to Durham, requesting money. The male was quickly identified as James Carr, who had previous convictions for fraud and an active Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) in place prohibiting him from approaching members of the public with the intention of seeking unsolicited work or money.

⚖ This morning, the 24-year-old attended Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court, where he pleaded guilty to all charges relating to breaches of his CBO committed between 10 October and 14 October. He was sentenced to 16 weeks' imprisonment and the Criminal Behaviour Order will remain in place until February 2031.

We remain committed to tackling crime and anti-social behaviour across Durham City, using all available powers and working closely with our partners, local businesses, and Shopwatch members. By doing so, we can identify and target prolific offenders earlier, helping to make our city a safer place for everyone.

⛓️ Another one back behind bars!

Bailey DiCaprio was arrested and remanded in custody after being identified as the suspect in a number of theft offences in September.

⚖ On Friday 17 October, the 29-year-old appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court, where he pleaded guilty to theft. As a result, his previous eight-month suspended prison sentence was activated.

This is another positive result for the Sherburn Neighbourhood Policing Team and demonstrates our continued commitment to holding offenders accountable for their actions and protecting our communities.

A prolific shoplifter has been banned from entering every Sainsbury's store in County Durham, excluded from entering the Gilesgate area, and handed a 46-week prison sentence.

Louise Walker appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court earlier this week charged with multiple counts of shoplifting.

The 45-year-old pleaded guilty to the offences, and imprisonment was deemed the only suitable option. The court also granted a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), banning Walker from every Sainsbury's store in County Durham and prohibiting her from entering the Gilesgate area of Durham.

Sergeant Arneil, from the Sherburn Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "My team has worked tirelessly to repeatedly put Walker before the courts, and we are pleased to see she is finally being put behind bars. We hope this gives some respite to our local businesses.

"We want to reassure businesses that shoplifting is dealt with robustly and will not be tolerated within our communities."

🫣 More lessons in camouflage needed….

On Tuesday evening, two students called 999 after hearing people breaking into their home in Durham City.

The suspects, described as wearing camouflage clothing and balaclavas, fled the address with an iPad.

The 999 call came into our Control Room at 11.18pm, with officers on scene within two minutes.

Luckily one of the students remembered the iPad’s location settings was turned on so officers were able to direct their area search.

Following a brief foot chase, both suspects were arrested by PCs Bray and Hounslow and off to the cells within seven minutes of the initial call being made.

Both 23-year-old men were arrested on suspicion of burglary and the iPad was returned to its owner.
