Star Award: Rhett Richardson, Staff Nurse, and Greg Horsfall, Specialty Registrar ⭐

During a night shift, Rhett and Dr Greg met a patient whose condition had been gradually deteriorating over the weekend. Recognising that something wasn't right, Rhett acted immediately, trusting his instincts and seeking urgent medical support. Together, he and Greg worked tirelessly to assess, treat and stabilise the patient, despite the pressures of a busy night shift, limited resources, and other competing demands across the hospital.

What really stood out was their calm, focused and collaborative approach. They worked seamlessly together, never losing sight of the patient or the importance of supporting her family through an incredibly frightening time.

Rather than accepting the patient's deterioration, they recognised the seriousness of the situation and took swift, decisive action. Their quick thinking, clinical judgement and determination made a significant difference, and their actions are believed to have helped save a life.

Rhett and Greg are shining examples of going above and beyond, demonstrating compassion, teamwork and an unwavering commitment to putting patients first. Thank you both for the incredible care you provided and for making such a difference to this patient and her family.

Our final award of the evening is the Chief Executive’s Award. This is unlike the other awards tonight, as the winner is chosen by Clare Smith, our Trust’s Chief Executive.

This year, this goes to our maternity teams.

These teams have been on an amazing journey. Both of our maternity services have improved their CQC rating from inadequate to good, with all five CQC areas now rated good. But this award recognises so much more than ratings. It celebrates colleagues who have faced difficult challenges with courage, listened and learned, embraced change and worked together to make care safer and better for women, babies and families.

While continuing to care for around 4,000 women and babies each year, our maternity teams have shown remarkable resilience, compassion and determination. They have strengthened teamwork and leadership, listened to women’s experiences and helped build a culture of openness, learning and continuous improvement.

This is a truly deserved recognition of the people behind this transformation, and a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we take responsibility, support one another and keep the people in our care at the heart of everything we do.

Congratulations to every single one our maternity colleagues – this is for you!
