Everyday emergencies like storms can disrupt the essential services you rely on -like your phone, water, power and the internet.

Taking a few simple steps to prepare can make a big difference, helping you manage while emergency support reaches those who need it most.

If you or someone you know might need extra support during a gas, electricity or water outage, they may be able to sign up for the Priority Services Register. Itโ€™s a free service that ensures utility companies know who may need extra assistance.

Lots of households are eligible, including those of pensionable age, people with long-term illnesses, and families with children under 5.

Find out more about how to prepare and check your eligibility for extra help by searching using the 'Be Ready' link in our bio.

Eastbourne will come together to commemorate Armistice Day with a series of events next month, including the Sunday Service of Remembrance on 8 November.

The annual Service of Remembrance, which takes place at the War Memorial, begins with a military parade through the town watched by hundreds of residents and visitors.

Led by representatives from the military, ex-service personnel, emergency services and other organisations, the procession will start from Terminus Road precinct at 10.25am before moving along Cornfield Road to the War Memorial.

On arrival, they will be joined by civic dignitaries, including the Mayor of Eastbourne and the Deputy Lieutenant of East Sussex, Professor Nick Webborn CBE DL, who will lead a parade from the Town Hall at 10.30am to the War Memorial, where the service will begin.

A thanksgiving service conducted by the Mayorโ€™s Chaplain, Reverend Jonathan Ga***rd will be accompanied by musicians from the Eastbourne Citadel Salvation Army Band and the Scottish Pipe Band. The service will include a two-minute silence at 11am and the official wreath-laying.

The service concludes with a parade by ex-military personnel along South Street. To facilitate the event, a number of road closures will be put in place between 10am and 1pm.

The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Margaret Bannister, said: โ€œRemembrance is a deeply poignant time for Eastbourne as we honour the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of all those who have served within the armed forces and emergency services, and their families too.

โ€œThe incredible turnout we see year after year is a testament to the strength of shared gratitude within our community. It is our duty to ensure that the sacrifices of those who served are never forgotten and that we continue to stand in solidarity with our veterans and active service personnel today.โ€

Other Remembrance Services
Eastbourneโ€™s Remembrance events will begin with the annual Concert of Remembrance by Eastbourne Silver Band at Our Lady of Ransom Church in Grange Road on Sunday 1 November at 2.30pm, also attended by the Mayor of Eastbourne.

On Sunday 8 November, a service at the Ruthless Memorial at Butts Brow will honour the crew who lost their lives when the World War II USAAF Liberator bomber crashed into the downland above Willingdon in 1944. Led by the Royal British Legion and attended by the Mayor of Eastbourne, the service begins at 3pm, with attendees meeting at Butts Brow car park at 2.45pm.

On Armistice Day โ€“ Wednesday 11 November โ€“ there will be a service at 10.40am at the War Memorial Houses in Victoria Drive attended by the Mayor of Eastbourne. These houses and memorial were funded by the residents of Eastbourne at the end of WWII as a tribute to those who died or were injured in action, and are still used today as homes for ex-service personnel with medical disabilities and their families.

Following a record-breaking weekend, Beachy Head Marathon athletes can begin training for their next challenge with 2027 entries now on sale.

One of the UKโ€™s biggest off-road marathons will return from 23 โ€“ 24 October 2027, with entries open at early bird prices for a limited time.

After a particularly wet and windy run at this yearโ€™s event, athletes are celebrating their remarkable race achievements from over the weekend, including a womenโ€™s course record in one event.

Thousands of runners took on the iconic South Downs route with Timothy Short being the first across the Marathon finish line with a time of 3:06:32, and Alice Robinson being the first woman back with a time of 3:42:20.

In the Ultramarathon Joshua Woods managed a sub four-hour run with an impressive time of 3:53:13, while Lizzie Broughton not only placed first in the womenโ€™s category but broke the womenโ€™s Ultramarathon course record with a time of 4:46:11.

In the 10k, Aaron Oโ€™Shaughnessy took the top spot with a time of 41:04, while Meads runner Katie Stephens was the first female home with a time of 45:06.

Finally on Sunday, Steve Feltbower placed first in the Half Marathon with a time of 1:30:12, and Harriet Bloor was the fastest woman back with time of 1:37:33.

Eastbourne Borough Councilโ€™s Lead Member for Tourism & Place, Cllr Jenny Williams said, โ€œCongratulations to everyone who braved the weather and took part โ€“ you are all incredible! Thank you also to the charities and volunteers who supported the event over the weekend providing a warm welcome under difficult circumstances.

โ€œThis year was particularly challenging thanks to not one, but two storms, however the Beachy Head Marathon spirit was alive and well and everyone came together to deliver another fantastic event.โ€

The Beachy Head Marathon is supported by a number of volunteers and charities including Mankind, Eastbourne Sea Cadets, Birling Gap Coastguard, Beachy Head Ramblers, Seaford Striders, Victoria Baptist Church, St Wilfridโ€™s Hospice and Hailsham Rotary Club.

Each voluntary organisation will receive a donation from the event โ€“ with more than ยฃ100,000 issued to date. It is also estimated that runners themselves raise a further ยฃ100,000 for good causes each year through sponsorship alone.

The Beachy Head Marathon returns from 23 โ€“ 24 October 2026 for its 47th year, starting and finishing on Eastbourne Seafront. The event is supported by The View Hotel, Euro Self Drive and Bedeโ€™s School.

The challenging off-road course includes an eye-watering 300 steps, 14 gates, an elevation gain of up to 1,381m and all seven of the world renowned Seven Sisters white cliffs.

The picturesque route also takes in parts of the South Downs Way, national park countryside, forest, four villages, two lighthouses and one river valley โ€“ making it one of the most scenic and challenging to complete.
