As the traditional mourning period for Tulku Hungkar Dorje Rinpoche ends today, we are pleased to share this statement from Chris Law SNP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Tibet.

Statement on the Death and Cremation of Tulku Hungkar Dorje

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Tibet is deeply saddened and gravely concerned by the recent death of Tulku Hungkar Dorje, a highly respected Tibetan Buddhist teacher and community leader. The subsequent cremation of his body - carried out before any independent investigation could be undertaken - has destroyed key evidence and raises alarming concerns about collusion between the authorities of China and Vietnam.

This incident is emblematic of a broader pattern of repression. The Chinese government’s systematic assault on Tibetan culture, religion, and identity has long been documented. We are increasingly alarmed that these violations are now extending across international borders, through methods of transnational repression, including intimidation, surveillance, and silencing of Tibetan voices in exile. The suspicious murder of Tulku Hungkar Dorje in Vietnam represents a new and dangerous phase in China’s transnational repression.

We call for urgent international scrutiny and a credible, independent investigation into the circumstances of Tulku Hungkar Dorje’s death. The actions taken to destroy evidence only reinforce the need for full transparency and accountability.

We urge the UK Government, and its international partners, to demand answers from the Chinese authorities and to take a firm stand against all forms of transnational repression. Tibetan people - both within Tibet and in the diaspora - must be able to practice their religion, safeguard their cultural heritage, and speak freely, without fear of persecution or interference.

We stand in solidarity with the Tibetan community at this profoundly distressing time and reaffirm our ongoing commitment to the protection of human rights, justice, and religious freedom for all Tibetans.
