The film tells the story of Stefano Gheller, the second person in Italyโand the first in the Veneto regionโto have legally obtained the right to medically assisted su***de without having to leave his own country. A personal story that becomes universal, a clear-eyed and heartrending journey into the heart of the end-of-life debate. Stefano had made his decision long ago. But, unlike so many others, he chose not to flee to Switzerland. He stayed in Italy to fight a civil and human battle, pursuingโwith dignity and ironyโa profound, radical, and courageous demand for freedom.

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday at the ARC, University of Glasgow, for the screening of The Great Ambition, directed by Andrea Segre.
The film provided a profound exploration of Italian Communist leader Enrico Berlinguer, masterfully balancing political history with intimate human drama. It was a privilege to reflect on the enduring tensions between political ideals and reality through such a powerful cinematic lens.

Zurich Opera presents Giuseppe Verdiโs stunning opera, A Masked Ball, filled with desire, treachery and political peril. Verdiโs exquisite music comes to life with Gianandrea Noseda conducting Orchestra of the Zurich Opera House at Edinburgh International Festival ๐
๐
: From 26 to 30 August 2026
๐: Festival Theatre
Love and deception swirl at the center of Giuseppe Verdiโs stunning opera A Masked Ball (Un ballo in maschera) from Zurich Opera House. Riccardo, the Governor of Boston, is in love with his best friendโs wife. Caught between love and loyalty, Riccardo risks everything โ his political standing and even his life.
Nosedaโs passionate conducting style is perfectly suited for the high-stakes drama central to A Masked Ball. Two stellar casts alternate between performances, with ill-fated lovers Riccardo and Amelia played by Stephen Costello and Elena Stikhina (26 and 30 August), and Piero Pretti and Erika Grimaldi (27 and 29 August).
Originally inspired by the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden, Verdiโs subject matter proved too controversial, forcing him to relocate the operaโs setting from Sweden to Boston. Now, โrazor-sharpโ (The Guardian) Welsh director Adele Thomas adds a fresh twist, transporting it to the opulent American Gilded Age, where sinister rumours threaten to spin this ordered world into chaos.

Celebrate the beauty of Baroque orchestral music with the Venice Baroque Orchestra and its founder-director Andrea Marcon at Edinburgh International Festival ๐
๐
: 14 August, 11:00 am
๐: The Queen's Hall, Edinburgh
Performing on period instruments, the orchestra has won praise for its seminal recordings of music by Antonio Vivaldi. This concert highlights the variety of Vivaldiโs virtuoso works for soloists and orchestra, from the soulfulness of the Concerto for Two Cellos to the flamboyant high spirits of the Flute Concerto.
Works by two of Vivaldiโs distinguished London-based contemporaries are also on the programme. Francesco Geminianiโs lively Concerto grosso is based on a famous dance tune, while George Frideric Handelโs is full of grace and charm.
