Our moth and butterfly expert Alyx in the garden found a ghost moth caterpillar in the garden. How amazing! ๐
Alys says: "Ghost moth are really cool because they have very obvious sexual dimorphism - the females are orange with gorgeous colouration, and the males are a striking white, they're also fairly big in terms of UK moths!"
๐ฆ Did you know that weโve launched a new citizen science project at Granton Castle Walled Garden?
Weโre inviting you to help us record butterflies and moths on site. There are ID resources and log books available in the garden, support from knowledgeable volunteers, and workshops coming soon if youโd like to build your skills.

It hibernates as an adult โ one of the first butterflies youโll spot on a warm late-winter day is often just waking up from sheds, attics, or tree hollows.
It depends on nettles โ its caterpillars feed almost exclusively on stinging nettles, so leaving a patch wild really matters.
Itโs declining in parts of the UK โ once incredibly common, itโs now seen less often in some areas.
๐ Thatโs why weโve launched our new citizen science project at Granton Castle Walled Garden.
Weโre inviting you to help us record butterflies and moths on site. There are ID resources and log books available in the garden, support from knowledgeable volunteers, and workshops coming soon if youโd like to build your skills.
