Following a public consultation https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/latest-news/tartan-fees-consultation-analysis-published/, the Keeper of the Scottish Register of Tartans recommended updating the fees to cover the costs required to deliver the service.

Scottish Ministers have accepted this recommendation and the fees for the Scottish Register of Tartans will increase on 19 January 2026.

This fee change will support the continued development of the Register, ensuring that tartan heritage is preserved for current and future generations in Scotland and around the world.

Any applications received before 19 January will be charged at the current fee rates.

From 19 January onwards, new fees will apply. For the full schedule of new fees, please visit fees - https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/fees

We’ve published the analysis of responses to our consultation on tartan registration fees - https://nrscotland.gov.uk/publications/the-scottish-register-of-tartans-fees-review-consultation-analysis/

We received 30 responses which show support for our proposals:
• 28 out of 30 respondents agreed that NRS should recover its costs for delivering the tartans service
• 24 out of 30 agreed that future fees should increase with inflation
• 22 out of 30 agreed that we should discontinue providing framed certificates

Following careful consideration of all responses, the Keeper of the Scottish Register of Tartans has recommended that Scottish Ministers increase the fees to the levels proposed in the consultation.

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to respond and share their views.

We will keep customers informed as we progress with implementing the fee changes.
